The clock kept running

I noticed it twice On Sunday. Once when Lynch ran out of bounds and once when Russell ran out of bounds. The stadium clock kept ticking. Not for just a few ticks. It just kept running and we ran another play. I thought the clock always stopped when a player with the ball goes out of bounds. Is there a new rule? Did I miss something? Am I smoking too much crack?

Thanks,
SC

Only after the 2 minute warning in the first half and last 5 in the second half if I'm not mistaken?
Always stops for incompletions

The clock still stops on an OB play as well other than those times (the beginning of the 1st quarter for example), but it's just that it continues to run once the ball is reset if memory serves me correctly.

"With the exception of the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half, the game clock will be restarted following a kickoff return, a player going out of bounds on a play from scrimmage, or after declined penalties when appropriate on the referee’s signal."

I think sometimes depending on the situation the ref spotting the ball may keep the clock moving outside of the designated 7 total minutes.

Rules were tweaked a while back to speed up the game. I think around the time challenges were added.

I remember shortly after they changed that rule, I hadn't realized it and early in the season I thought the refs were doing a horrible job of watching the clock for accuracy. Ever since then, I don't even pay attention to the clock starting and stopping until closer to the end of each half.

I really like these clock rules, the games go faster. Whereas College drags on and on. It's much better for the fans IMO.

All I can say is wow. How have I not noticed this until the Colts game? I tried to google when it was adopted, but no luck. Is it new this year?

Thanks for answering. At least I know I don't have to cut back on my crack consumption.

I don't recall the year, but it was quite a few years ago. Long enough that I have gotten to the point where I had forgotten it changed until it was brought up in this thread

I noticed that too, and thought the ref was on crack. The new rule makes sense--it's not reducing the number of plays or anything, just keeping the game time from bloating on the new revues.
