Holmgren said, Steve came to him, balling like a baby.. no way did he want to leave Seattle.Transition Tag happened when Holmgren was on vacation with Ruskell going behind Holmy’s back at least that is the story that has been told. I always wondered if it was a power play between Hutch and Walter Jones that Hutch wanted to be the leader of the O line and it wasn’t happening playing with Jones
Sounds like there was a toxic HC/GM relationship between Holmgren and Ruskell
Which allowed us to match any offer.LOL.. we gave him a trans offer.
Yeah, transaction tag which was rather insulting and a sign of indifference.. If you wanted him, you slap the franchise tag.. otherwise, it's a what ever, maybe we will, maybe we won't.Which allowed us to match any offer.
Oh FFS dude, that transition tag allowed Hutch to receive TWO contract offers for 7 years $49M in the span of a week. Tell me again how insulting that is.Yeah, transaction tag which was rather insulting and a sign of indifference.. He wanted to stay in Seattle? He is the one who asked for the poison pill language to be in the contract! He's the one who made it prohibitive for Seattle to match MN's contract offer as written.Holmgren said, Steve came to him, balling like a baby.. no way did he want to leave Seattle.
Correction ...... once he collected his considerable contract money, he did return to scout for the Seahawks. If he wanted to stay in Seattle, he had a funny way of showing it, and he made no effort to return.
I meant as a player, but yeah.Correction ...... once he collected his considerable contract money, he did return to scout for the Seahawks.
Part of the reason the Seahawks did the Nate Burleson contract offer the way they did was that MN was trying to get us to part with a 2nd round pick, since , ya know, our 3rd round pick was so low. After abusing us with the Hutch thing, they had the gall to try that. So the Seahawks got creative.“I don’t want to do it,” Holmgren added. “But the guys next door, the front office, they are going to write it.”
Which, of course, they did. Seattle’s offer contained multiple poison pills that spoke nakedly to its main aim: revenge. One clause stated that Burleson’s deal would be guaranteed in full if he played more than five games in any one season in Minnesota. Even if the Vikings wanted to match the offer, they could not, and what had started as a workaround had morphed into something bigger, more spiteful; Holmgren’s revenge served not cold but hot.
Minnesota ultimately ended up on the better end of the exchange. Burleson compiled an average of 439.5 receiving yards in four seasons as a Seahawk. Hutchinson made the Pro Bowl in his first four seasons with the Vikings, remained perhaps pro football’s most dominant guard and reset the market at his position. Essentially, he was exactly the kind of player who would force a historic moment—so elite that a team that coveted him would go to great lengths to obtain his services and so valued that the team that lost him would create its own transaction in response out of no more than hurt feelings.

Likely got Holmgren fired also. With Hutch and big Walt back there together, everything would be different. The poison pill contract situation with Hutchinson was created by the unquestionably stupid decision of then GM Ruskell to transition tag Hutchinson when a comparatively smaller increase would have franchised Hutch keeping him here. it was a bad decision that truly hurt the team and cost them a HOF level OG and this decision set the team back significantly. Even Holmgren was truly shocked and upset about the situation which resulted in the loss of a key part of a very solid OLine. The team never really got it back to same level and still has questions the exist over the interior of the OLine.
In the end it got Russell fired as part of a series of collectively dumb management decisions. I was glad to see him gone.
It's not the point, the point is, he was promised by the GM the Franchise tag..Holmgren even confirmed it with him and while Holmgren was on vaca..he was awarded the Trans tag...BTW you know if the trans tag is so good, why has there been only like 6 since its inception awarded to players?Oh FFS dude, that transition tag allowed Hutch to receive TWO contract offers for 7 years $49M in the span of a week. Tell me again how insulting that is.
