It is possible we could keep both (6 wr's) but I'd like to see people's arguments for each, as if we had to keep just one.

Williams brings a deep threat and height factor that only Rice has, if Rice went down we would be sorely lacking size and speed in our top 3WR's this season. Williams is not the most versatile WR and didn't stand out on Special teams, but 6'5 wiht 4.4 that can actually catch is not that easy to replace. I question his attitude a little as he seems to be overly emotional about not getting a PI call his way, and in training camp after he took a cheap shot from Guy he tried to start a fight or was at least jawing back. I don't believe he has practice squad eligibility so if we cut him he's gone

Harper has the upside of an Anquan Boldin/David Boston, he is very strong and almost looks like a 6'1 230lb RB out there. With his size he fits the mold of a perfect Split End and with a year of grooming could be ready to step in for Golden Tate is he bolts in FA. He might not be a valuable asset this year as a WR but he could play a part on special teams and it has been said tht only Russell Wilson beats his to the facility and stays later. I like that sort of drive and being a former QB in College he probably needs to put in the extra work to catch up to some of the more fluid WR's. Harper was a 4th round pick so cutting him might be hard as I'm not sure if he would make the PS. It's a gamble but if we could it might be the best place for him.

I really like both of these two players...Williams showed some nice deep catches in this last preseason game. I still like Harper too. Dang it...decisions, decisions. I guess we will have to watch more preseason games to see which of the young WRs make the team.

right now for WR's I think it will be...

Rice
Tate
Baldwin
Kearse (looks solid so far)
Williams (so far, he looks like he makes it)
Harper (still hoping he shows his talent and makes it)

and then when Harvin comes back I have no idea what happens to the WR group (other than they get even better)

Pretty much exactly what I expect. When Harvin comes back we'll have 4 preseason games plus probably 10+ regular season games to evaluate who stays. If Harper is kept inactive for a few of those he's still practice squad eligible (as long as he's active for less than 9 games, I'm not sure if that means 9 or less or 8 or less...)

Too early for an argument. We have 3 1/2 weeks of camp/football to sort this out.

Great insight, if only I could be as intuitive as you. For some reason I though the season had already started and we made all our roster cuts.

Really though, what's the point of having a discussion forum if we can't talk about things that are still unsettled? If it is not to early to talk about next years draft (which happens the moment after the draft ends) then I think anything is up for debate.

I think this competition for the #5 WR spot is just getting started but Williams or Harper are just about locks so why not start talking now and as preseason and camp progresses we can watch this bloom into a full on side picking .net fight like we have with our QB's int he past. The WR, LB, and CB competition are the toughest this year but with WR being the sexiest of the positions it should the one in the spotlight.

At CB we are soo deep it doesn't really matter who make it and who doesn't we are set
At LB so far we have a bunch of below avg guys fighting for a spot so it almost seems like whoever screws it up the least is going to win, nobody has really stood out and i don't expect so see a big difference with whoever is on the field.
At WR we have 2 totally different players possibly fighitng for one spot and both players could have a major impact on this season and the next.

you lost me when you said David Boston ..

Williams > Harper

Harper has the size of Boston, Boston had a few good years, he was 6'2 228, Harper is 6'1 230. Both look like RB's. You know who looks bigger was Phil Bates, that dude looked thick this year, both Bates and Harper looked more jacked than Christine Michael when i was at training camp.

Hated the Harper pick when we drafted him, he just looks awkward out there to me. Pete and John obviously know what they're doing, so hopefully they prove me wrong once again. As of today i'll take Williams

Knock yourself out.

I'll let the players and coaches figure it out.

true enough... it sure is nice having Pete and John making these type of decisions that actually add great players to the team. It's just fun to watch what they do and how well the last few years have panned out.

Ruskell and the effects of his choices are looking smaller and smaller in the rear view mirror

This. And it may not come down to that either. We may keep both and try to stash Bates on PS if we keep 6. Harvin being on PUP won't count.

You are comparing a 3 year player vs a rookie. A rookie WR just doesn't come into the NFL and take it over by storm. You have to be patient.

I'm guessing if Harper stays around, he'll be the designated receiver that throws the ball fir trick plays since he was a qb out of high school.

Williams obviously has the edge at this minute, but that can change 16 times between now and week 1.

Unfortunately, a lot of these back end of the roster battles (should we keep player A or player B) that we debate every training camp get determined by health/injury. Potential end of the roster guys get hurt in the last couple of preseasons games every year and go on IR or are released with an injury settlement, and those injuries make the decision of who to keep more obvious. Williams has to stay healthy first - if he does, then I think he's a lock.

The thing about Williams is that he gives you size that no one else on the roster does. I think right now at this stage of their careers, he just offers more to the team than Harper. If Williams keeps up his play from this week, I would think he makes it. Guys that big that can run routes and catch don't grow on trees

Hard to have this conversation without mentioning the elephant in the room. They are already pregnant with Harvin. But he's a hood ornament for this season. I think both of these guys make the team simply based on what they have both shown thus far, coupled with the need in Harvins absence. TE competition on the other hand?

Williams right now looks to be a potential 4rth WR that has alot of upside, can't say that about Harper .

I think both Stephan Williams and Chris Harper need more preseason game day snaps.
