Team comments suggest this could be a temporary roster flexibility move to add a desired player without risking losing a different valuable player to waivers or another PS.
Or maybe the team just likes the younger, cheaper corners better for the money. I'm going with the concept that Shaq will be back, and it's just a gentleman's agreement between JS and Shaq's agent, to re-sign with the Hawks once the roster-shuffling is complete. Quill did get to play with his brother Quim in Seattle for a couple years with JS running the roster show, so there may be some trust and goodwill in play.

As a vested vet he doesn't have to pass waivers, so they can have a handshake agreement not to sign elsewhere and they can bring them back after some other roster shuffling. And they can wait until after game 1 so their salary is not guaranteed for the whole season. Down points of being on the roster bubble.

I think he has something left in the tank. Definitely more of a depth vibe than anything. Plus he genuinely loves being a Seahawk and being back from what I've read.

PS has so many (I think 6) slots that can be filled by vets
Consider the bigger picture.
Check out the background of recently signed Derion Kendrick. An older vet can only help Kendrick's focus on the present and learn and move on from past mistakes.

FIFY. Did you realize how absolutely right and absolutely important your point is?
Depth at corner and safety. I'm gonna say that tissue-paper thin depth at CB and SS has cost Seattle 2 Lombardis.
SBXL, we'd lost SS Ken Hamlin to a stupid bar fight earlier in the year, but OK, we had Marquand Manuel. But, but, but... Manuel was injured in the first half. Replaced by (who?) street free agent Etric Pruitt, fresh off the couch. Pruitt exploited on 2 Stealers TDs in the 2nd half.
SBXLIX we lost CB Jeremy Lane to an ACL and broken arm, and had to put in an injured Tharald "Toast" Simon. Brady, Edelman and Amendola carved Simon up to get the win. I never understood why injured Simon was active and Marcus Burley was a healthy scratch.
OK, so Edge rushing depth is important too, because when Cliff Avril went down in XLIX, Hawks didn't get much pressure on Brady the rest of the way.
Between Kendrick and Griffin, a couple PBUs at key times could easily be the difference, if one is out but the other is available.
