The accident happened at the junction of Hamilton and Alma in Palo Alto; Hamilton is a 2 lane street that T on to Alma, a 4 lanes road where people drive quite fast. Speculatively, I suspect Shanahan was on Alma when some SUV from Hamilton T boned him, but he avoided more serious injury by having the passenger seat as a buffer.

Get well, Coach Shanahan; more fun to have you on the sideline when we play and defeat 49ers.

Due to my career path I tend to look at vehicle crashes differently than most.

Fact is, they are almost always preventable and someone is almost always at fault.
It’s rare that excessive speed, impairment, or voluntary distraction isn’t a major factor.

I get it, that’s overstating the obvious. Unfortunately it’s usually only obvious after the fact.

Some of you may remember because I posted about it after being Doxed by an ex-member here.
A few years ago I was involved in a crash that resulted in a woman losing her life, I was found partially at fault.
It’s a long story and I won’t rehash the details now, but myself and the other driver both played a role, and a % of blame was placed on both parties.
In retrospect the crash was 100 preventable.

I say this here and now only to serve as a reminder to all.

Operating a motor vehicle on public roads is a responsibility that most of us grow complacent to.

Please be alert and safe while on the road. Someone needs you.
The line between life and death can be much thinner than you think about regularly.

Hopefully coach heals up quickly and completely.

Sorry you had to go through that my guy. I was in an accident a few years ago that was totally my fault. Thank God it was a one car accident. Honda Pilot vs Ponderosa pine. I lost. Broke my left femur in 3 places, broken back, two broken wrists, 6 broken ribs, concussion. I was working graveyard at the time and fell asleep on the way home at 4am after a 14 hr shift. I veered off the road and slammed into the tree at 65 mph.
Took me a few years to learn how to walk again but my body is full of metal. Rods, pins and screws but I'm still alive. Airbags and seatbelt saved my life. Accidents are life altering. I'm glad Kyle is slated to make a full recovery. Btw your wrists are the first bones that break in any accident by simply holding on to the steering wheel. Kyle suffered injuries consistent with speeding. You don't break bones in a parking lot fender bender as reported by the media. The police said no one was at fault which is the first time in the history of organized law enforcement dating back to Henry Ford that a "no fault" two car accident took place making their insurance policies null and void.

On a side note. Black eyes take forever to heal. I looked like a raccoon for a couple of months hence the sunglasses

While I've considered myself an alert and careful driver and have never been in an at-fault accident in my many years of driving, an increasing trend has prompted me to be even more alert in certain situations: the prevalence of accident clips shared by others on social media, thanks to the ubiquitous nature of dash cams and other types of cameras on cars (and other places) these days.

While most posters post accident clips to get clicks, many of them are educational in demonstrating how easy it is for an unobservant or inattentive driver to cause an accident, and how certain specific situations and locations require a particular kind of vigilance on top of a minimum level of alertness.

This of course doesn't guarantee that I'll always avoid an accident, but it definitely heightens my awareness of all sorts of things that COULD be dangerous and COULD happen. I think exposure to accident clips -- especially those that show how the dangerous situation developed -- is a good thing as long as the person uses them as informative and educational. As opposed to becoming fearful or paranoid behind the wheel.
