Serious question: Why did Pete pull Russ in the 4th?

Because he only cared about getting the bye in playoffs, otherwise, I doubt he really cared that much about matchups, IMO. He treats all opponents the same, not any better or worse

You actually think from a game planning perspective this is true? hmmmm
Short term, no way. Big picture, I could see it. It's a version of we do our thing, we don't worry a lot about them. If you're truly going one game at a time, you stay sanguine about next week, until today's game is over. Hell, you even know the next two games are home, then away. You don't worry about game planning until you know who you'll play next.

Some people over-think this stuff.

And it honestly didn't matter if we won or lost. Falcons had the 2nd seed sewn up.

It did matter though. A loss would have meant a matchup with the New York Giants instead of the Detroit Lions in the first round. It also would have meant that if they faced the Green Bay Packers later in the playoffs, the game would have been played at Lambeau Field instead of CenturyLink Field. It was stupid.

100% True.

Let's be honest, for as good as of a coach as Pete is..............and he's one of the all time best. He's had a track record of terrible in game decisions.

This was one of them. He thought the game was in hand, he thought he could just coast with backups, and shizzle almost went horribly wrong.

What if Boykin doesn't recover his own fumble on that first series and SF goes in for the winning score? We'd be crucifying Pete today on here.

It was dumb, unnecessary and another example of Pete's getting cute and gambling when he doesn't need to. Just like the SB play, just like a fake punt getting our punter almost killed for no reason, and many others.

Next time we need a 5 minute drive to run out the clock in the fourth, can we put Boykin/Collins/McEvoy in please? I haven't seen us able to salt the clock like that all season.

This is a good point and I don't know who's decision it was to pull players but if we were committed to going with the back ups then why pull Mcevoy after two great catches or Collins after a couple good runs?

I felt like we were actually trying to give the game away.

Great job by Boykin.

3 or 4 seed??? Who cares. Is that worth risking injury? Like I said nice to see the rook get play time under pressure.

Let me first say that I absolutely love PC. He's the reason we have a championship in Seattle.

However, his press conference after the game, bald-face lying to everyone that he wanted "to rest starters" after the 2 seed was in doubt, was by far the least impressive thing I've seen from him in his tenure.

In response to this question
3 of 4 seed?? Who cares?

Well you had better believe every Seahawks fan in the world would care if we lost and took the 4th seed and GB beat Detroit and ATL and we beat NYG and Dallas....

The NFCC game would be held in GB where we got crushed mightily versus our home Stadium where we've beaten them the last few times.

Moreover, the ATL game wasn't over yet with NO. They ended up winning but NO pulled off a last minute flurry and were an onside kick and a few completions away from winning the game. What would have happened if Boykin went 3 and out and we lost the game, and either of those two scenarios happened?

Sure, they didn't, but if they did you would have had the most boneheaded move that I can remember. And for what? To rest starters for one more series in a season where they've liked hundreds of series'?

PC has never been shy about the fact that he doesn't worry about injuries. He competes at practice like a game and plays his guys until there is no doubt. I don't know what the real logic was but I assure you it was foolish and had little to do with injuries.

So apparently Pete saw some dirty play from the Niners and didn't want to risk his key players because unlike us, they have nothing to lose

This just goes to show, yet again, that we sometimes need to stop playing arm chair coach. Pete knew what he was seeing and made a smart decision

It shows nothing of the kind IMO. Are you saying Russell 100% certain would have been injured?

Also Pete said he only considered the #2 seed in the decision. It sounded like he had no clue we could lose a 2nd home playoff game if we lost...which makes it a stupid ill informed decision.

Because Uncle Pete is the greatest of Uncle of all time. He wins without even trying. He also realized that the armless child that is Chip was on the other sideline

What does this have to do with the point being made, which is that the 49ers were playing dirty?

Your option is to leave your franchise QB in facing dirty play from one of the worst teams in the league, or potentially risk injury after he's been pounded enough already this year. Who can really say for 100% sure whether a injury will happen or not? Do injuries announce themselves before happening?

Pete said what he said but later reports are adding that there was additional info, so how was it stupid?

Nothing. Good point. We probably should pull all the starters every time another team starts playing dirty. Just pack it in and call it a season.
.....this is NOT just about Russell. They pulled Bennett and Graham too!

And Doug Baldwin. No, they were not just "worried about injuring the star quarterback." They put in backups across the board resting guys. Whether or not it was because the "49ers were playing dirty" is fairly irrelevant, as there was still playoff seeding to play for, and we could easily have lost it.

Sounds more and more like the Niners were cheap shotting and Pete was worried about Russ and some other starters. Interesting if that's the case.
