LOL, pickin's must be pretty slim out there...
The 49ers released Cox (5-foot-11, 189 pounds) earlier this month. The 26-year-old cornerback had two tackles in nine games for the 49ers this season. He started nine games for the Denver Broncos in 2010 but sat out the 2011 season after he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at his apartment in September 2010, although he was acquitted of the charges in 2012 and signed with San Francisco later that year.

Nothing we pick up off the trash heap does much for me, other than being there for depth.

OTOH this is Schneider and Pete we're talking about and in their first year they did a lot with table scraps and nobodies. So there is that.

I'm just on my knees thanking heaven right now that it's one position, and that none of this is happening to the OL. The best pass defense in the NFL turns into, what, only a top-10 defense maybe without one of it's starting corners? That's a lot better than the OL being the worst unit in the history of mankind minus 3 starters.

One would think that bringing Winfield back would be a long shot assuming he has been chilling out since his TC release. However, I have a suspicion that since they will likely sign him or already have, that Pete and Co probably knew this sitch with Browner and Thurmond was coming, hopefully they were in Winfield's ear a few weeks ago and advised him to get off the couch and get on the treadmill. The benefit of having AW on the roster is his knowledge and experience to help with guys like Shead and Cox.

I'm ok with Maxwell and Lane moving forward without BB and Thurmond with Winfield, Shead and Cox as depth.

I still contend that it's going to be tough to sign Winfield. He doesn't need the game checks, and has said all year that if he comes back it's to play for a Super Bowl.

So the question isn't do we want to sign him, the question is can Pete and John promise to keep Winfield on the roster through the playoffs? It's not worth his time to come all the way out here and punish his body for four game checks until Thurmond comes off suspension, then get cut. THAT'S why I think these talks are getting complicated and taking a long time.

You said in the Cox thread it wasn't happening.....now there's a chance?

The latest from NFL.com (take with a grain of salt since they've been all over the barn the last 24 hours and could just be trying to cover their butts with vague wording).

Pete Carroll said Monday his team considered signing Antoine Winfield to fill the role left by the missing corners. Rapoport reported Tuesday that the Seahawks still are talking to Winfield, and the veteran cornerback sounds willing to un-retire in order to join the team, according to a person with knowledge of Winfield's thinking. The Seahawks don't currently have a roster spot open, so there is no rush, per Rapoport.

He would be better than many of the other options out there available. I hope they can work something out.

Isn't there that place in Arizona where all the draft prospects go to get in shape for the combine? This place. Couldn't a guy like Winfield pay the money and go train there for a few weeks to get into game shape in advance of something like this? IF, as you say, he got the heads up. There's more than one place like this out there too I believe. He could hit the ground in great shape if he got the heads up. Not like he's just has to rely on taking a spin class at the rec center to stay in shape....

Pete said Cox and Shead are the guys they are adding. Made no mention of Winfield.

Well there we have it, looks like Winfield is out of the mix. Unless they eventually plan to cut Cox when they do sign Winfield.

Makes sense. Had Thurmond's suspension been any longer it probably could have been worked out. Cox or Shead will get dropped after 4 games (Betting on Cox). Winfield would want to contribute through a potential Superbowl and the team cant guarantee which player would be maintained after game 4 under the always compete mantra.
