I like Williams, but with Kearse showing success on the go route, it makes him a little redundant.

Would have liked to see him make himself more useful on special teams but it didn't happen, so he's gone.

Kinda surprised by this, but also not surprised at the same time. It does worry me that we have fewer Wrs on the roster now and have kept some other players that really shouldn't be kept around, Kellen Davis, but he just never showed the big play potential like he did in the preseason. And like have others have said, hopefully this means that Percy is very close to being back by week 7 like he predicted earlier.

No biggie. He was a training camp superstar in Arizona too, and then he never did anything in the season. He had zero catches this year. Kearse is doing well on go routes. Makes me think Harvin must be doing well too.

I bet Williams takes the route of Lockette, Martin and Harper and joins the 49ers without making an impact

It does make us thin at WR. We only have 4. Explains why the tryouts the last couple of weeks at WR. No question Kearse over Williams. He is a good special teams guy and will replace Lane on returning if he can't go.

We line up or RB's in slots and wide, This could be where Micheal may see the field at times, he does have speed. Veratility of our RB's may offset what Williams brought since Kearse has fulfilled the deep route well. Williams did not play special teams either. I would have liked to see him step up and become more of a utility type receiver also and it seems he had one play be it either side of the field we used him on. His speed and height was a great advantage but we either didn't capitalize on it or he was a tell for that route every time he took the field and therefore limited our ability to take advantage of those physical traits.

I'm not surprised by the cut, but I am by the order of the cuts. I imagine they figure in an absolute emergency our new qb Daniels can play a little WR, and getting rid of Lotulelei is filled by bringing in Irvin. I guess we should just hope we don't actually NEED that last WR this week. I'm not too worried about it though. I didn't even really expect Williams to be active this week anyway

"Deception" is an important factor for a WR.....Stephen Williams did not have that advantage.....unfortunately.

However, IMO...Percy Harvin will have that advantage when he comes on the field.

I know Harvin is eligible to come off the PUP after week 6. I just don't see how the team will even try to have him out there for game 7. I would bet Pete would want a couple weeks of practice before thinking about gradually working him into the game. I know Harvin tweeted he plans to be out there for game 7, just like Clemons wanted to be out there for game 1. Cooler heads are going to slow roll that happening.

Too bad for Williams, but he did get a chance to be on the 53 and got some game action. He may be brought back later in the season if the OL gets healthy, though I am sure other leaks pop up since that is the way of the NFL.

Take care Steven Williams. Best of luck to you.

Best of luck to him, but this news was not earth-shattering. He's one of many preseason heros that came and went. He was a one-trick pony that didn't even have the right attitude about increasing his worth to the team. I remember him responding to questions about playing special teams with less than a lukewarm attitude; something to the effect of "well, if I have to."

That attitude, combined with disappearing in September, probably made the FO decision easy. If you don't show something when the games count, you better be an Alex Bannister on special teams.

I really don't know what everyone was excited about with him. But I'm sure he'll remain on their speed dial unless he's snatched up.

You're kidding right ? He's going straight to San Fransisco

in the pre-season, he really rung his bell on the turf. maybe he's not back in game shape.

plus, with baldwin, tate, rice, and kearse - each of them more well-rounded than williams - there are a lot of other wrs for building synergy with russell.

I liked Williams but he wasn't a big contributor on special teams or anything other than the deep pass. Kearse is better. I actually expect PH to be playing in week 8. That will be known as D-Day to the rest of the league.

We have quite possibly the most explosive, all around talented football player in the NFL on the shelf, just waiting to be deployed. Like the Death Star lining up to take out the Rebels only Luke Skywalker is the one passing the ball to him.

I thought we were all excited when we signed Williams? Id rather have williams over kearse
Kearse is a special teams stud and caught the game winning td against Carolina. What exactly has Williams done in regular season play to be excited about?

No way he gets to the 49ers, a weaker team will claim him before they have the chance

Outside of a ticky tack OPI call, Kearse also made a great TD catch vs HOU. I have always thought Williams was someone I'd like to see on the practice squad. There is some talent there, but still very raw with his technique.

Dude might have potential but if you're going to be 5th on the depth chart, you'd better be able to play some ST. Too much tied up in the guy for what little he actually brings on Sunday.

Best of luck Dr. Death, we hardly knew ye...
