Keeping all those LB's is telling me we are going to blitz a lot. Our DT situation at this moment doesn't look much better than last year.

I think that's a hard call to make. Mebane is Mebane. Rock solid in all aspects.

Based on one game, I think McDaniel will be an upgrade from Branch, but at worst its a wash.

Bennett is a huge upgrade over Jones.

And then you are on to Jordan Hill verses Clinton McDonald, and I think the pendulum swings Hill's way, especially as the season wear's on.

Add Bryant looking better at DT and I think our interior line is looking solid.

When Jones is hurt, yes. When they're both healthy I don't know that I would call it a "huge upgrade".

Jones was solid until he went down last year.

Gotta get more pressure. I don't really care how, but Bennett and our hurt 3rd round pick look promising.

Both have injury concerns, but based on what I saw in the PS, Bennett is a huge upgrade. I think Bennett may have been the best player on the field at times this preseason.

I see it the opposite way. Usually cutting a good talent (Howard) isn't a sign of being desperate. I'm guessing they just really like this Smith guy.

It's not the cutting of Howard I'm considering really when I refer to desperation.

It's more the bargain bin shopping we've been doing at the position for the last few weeks, trying to find depth/potential starters. This was a big need last season and yet we're still looking for the right pieces a week before the season starts.

I think it says more about the depth than the starters. I think what these moves say is that the believe Hill is healthy, McDaniel is a starter, and Bennett is ready to dominate. Add those three to Mebane, and we're two deep at the position and roster turning third stringers.

Agree. I also think we may see big Red come inside at times, which gives us another big DT, when needed. So I'm not worried about our depth at the position at all now.

Although I still hope to somehow get either or both Howard and Brooks on the PS tomorrow. That would be really helpful!

How did we get so desperate at DT?

They must have really not liked Howard and Siliga.

We basically gave up Howard, Moffitt, and a conditional pick for this Smith guy.
Since when do other trades and cuts get included into other deals.

aside from installing a 3tech with a Warren Sapp like tool kit, the only way to address our lack of presure up the middle is to send LB's.

Basically that's the tradeoff we made. Obviously that is not what we really gave up, but the cards fell that way.

I guess really it is just Howard and a pick OR Moffitt (since we gave him up for Siliga) and a pick, not both, since Smith is only taking one of their roster spots.

But they really must not have liked what they saw from Howard or Siliga if they were willing to cut them and then pay for another player to replace them. That's all I was saying.

Not too excited by this move as i really thought that Howard did well for us this preseason and would like to have kept him. Hopefully i will be proven wrong.

I'm wondering if upgrading lateral quickness and the ability to play down the line was the difference between Howard and Smith. I know that was a point of emphasis during their off season talent acquisition efforts. Guess we sill have to wait to see what unfolds with the Smith acquisition.
