So .... they are cutting down to 52 players plus a tryout tackle?

Jags will get Clowney.

He was expendable.

3rd round pick,#74
Pick Analysis: Smith has a good combination of size and athleticism for an interior defender. He shows excellent initial quickness to penetrate the line and is most disruptive when in a stunting mode. Smith can improve his ability in base schemes with better pad level and consistent effort. He has good strength but only flashes ability to hold the point versus the run. He needs improved hand use to expand his pass rush package as well as leverage blockers better versus the run. Smith is a talented player that has upside to build on as an interior lineman in a 4-3 defensive scheme.

I don't know that this indicates desperation for pass rush. I think this is a project player until Percy Harvin gets activated, to be honest. I think the culling of these D-Linemen actually indicates that Clemons, Avril, Mebane, McDaniel, and Bennett aren't very badly hurt or are close to being healed and ready to go, depending on who we're talking about.

What rounds is the conditional pick in?

And why would we trade for a guy that spent 2 straight years on IR? To make Walter Thurmond feel better about his career?

Conditional 7th, which means they only get a 7th if he meets fairly minimal PT targets. Otherwise we loose nothing.

How come whenever we trade for someone, fans on the forums of the team we're trading with always post about how great their GM is? Lol

This makes the Howard cut more logical.

Yup. I was wondering if Seattle had their eye on another team's DT. Turns out they did.

Okay, so I found one video one youtube that showed Smith from his college days. Not much to glean from it, but a couple things:

He's very trim looking for a guy who's 300 at 6'2". His build is VERY athletic, his athleticism, size and physique is kind of in the same vein as guys like Sharriff Floyd.

Can't say anything about his technique but he played hard every snap, moved quickly and looked athletic. Sounds like he was a 3rd round pick purely because of high upside.

How did we get so desperate at DT?

I see it the opposite way. Usually cutting a good talent (Howard) isn't a sign of being desperate. I'm guessing they just really like this Smith guy.

Cances are good that Pete recruited him out of high school.

Seen a scouting report from 2010 and he was second among the DT's in the vertical jump with 35.5 inch. N. Suh is only other DT to beat him out so maybe they think he's finally healthy after finishing his last three seasons on IR and can work on getting penetration from the DT spot in their system.

It's not the cutting of Howard I'm considering really when I refer to desperation.

It's more the bargain bin shopping we've been doing at the position for the last few weeks, trying to find depth/potential starters. This was a big need last season and yet we're still looking for the right pieces a week before the season starts.

Is this guy healthy now or are we going to have to nurse him back to health before we see what we have, after all he still has to pass a physical and all.

I think it says more about the depth than the starters. I think what these moves say is that the believe Hill is healthy, McDaniel is a starter, and Bennett is ready to dominate. Add those three to Mebane, and we're two deep at the position and roster turning third stringers.

Keeping all those LB's is telling me we are going to blitz a lot. Our DT situation at this moment doesn't look much better than last year.
