Is Everything
I was about to add they reportedly want Fraley in for a 2nd interview as well.

To address Floridahawk79, that question was raised on 710 sports yesterday with Tom Pelissero about a 2 for 1 but he said with the rules it's not possible. It wouldn't be easy but Fraley could be OC and Udinski could be Passing Game Coordinator. And maybe that's what you meant by them being together but reports have been Fraley and Randle-el have been linked together. But who knows.
I think he implied even at that, it would be impossible.

He's not the most exciting, but he was only like 34 when he was calling plays in Minnesota. The book isn't written. If he's the hire, I'll reserve judgment.

I trust Mcdonald to choose someone that aligns with his vision and allows him to build the sort of team he wants, to manage the games the way he envisions them.

I see Fraley and Udinski as either strike outs or grand slams. I see Kubiak as a bloop single. After Grubb, are we gonna try swinging for the fences again, or take the safer route? Should be interesting.

Can you share the logic of hiring Udinski as OC? He has no game planning or play calling or staff management on his resume.
his absolute mastery of the playbook and plays in general. His meteoric trajectory. He's already an Assistant O coordinator so to say he has no play calling experience would be incorrect. I think he's destined for greatness.

Wasn't Grubb more of a timing hire, so late in the offseason cycle and all?

That, and his stint in Minny soubds like whst we have been deaking with here. From Justin Jefferson in 21:

"I think we should, you know, be more aggressive, when we get down there," Jefferson said. "As soon as we get down there. But I'm not the one calling the plays. I'm just here to do my job and do what was told to me. But we can't get down to the red zone that many times and come out with three points."

Not that fan opinion should determine anything, but he was not liked in Minnesota. He held the job for a year and got fired, then went to Denver to coach Russ and got fired, sat in SF fir a year before going to New Orleans where they finished the season with 5 wins after starting with 2 straight.

Minnesota had the 26th best 3rd down conversion percentage and led the league in 3 and outs under KK.

And 2 games with the Saints is supposed to be enough to show that 1 season with Shanahan made him better? I mean, he had Cousins and Jefferson in Minnesota...

Hard to get excited.
It's funny that Jefferson called him out for Red Zone issues, but Minnesota was top 10 in converting Red Zone TDs.

I mean, getting called out like that by your star receiver isn't good... but what he was getting called out for wasn't the real issue, either. So was Jefferson not getting the targets he thought he needed in the RZ? Or was he more frustrated with the season in general? Or does Kubiak just not have a good rapport with his players?

It's certainly something to be aware of. Minnesota's overall offense in 2021 was just average. Not great, but not bad by any means. As you noted though, they did have issues on 3rd down... and so did the Saints this year.

Derek Carr's success rate compared to league average is an up and down affair, so it might not mean much that he was below average this year. Cousins, though, typically has a good success rate. The only season he was below average out of the last 5... was 2021, with Klint Kubiak as his OC.

I'm still pretty ok with this choice (if the Seahawks go that way) because he hits multiple boxes I want (NFL play calling experience, good pass-to-run ratio, decent play-action rate) but it's not a clear homerun by any means.

What do you all think of Byron Leftwich??

PFT Link

Field Gulls Link
His offenses (ignoring his first season with Arizona as OC... looks like that was a split OC spot with another guy) have performed well, except in 2022 when Tampa kind of fell off.

He's SUPER pass heavy though. He was OC when Jameis Winson had that 30 INT season. I mean, we all know Winston can be a bit reckless with the ball... but that was 12 higher than his next highest INT season. His last season had 45-year-old Tom Brady leading the league in pass attempts.

Not sure that matches the direction Seahawks/Macdonald wants to go.

That was a part of it. We had to wait on Mack until the Ravens dropped out of the playoffs, and by then, the available coaches list was limited.

Yes. It is my belief that because all of the good OC candidates were already claimed, John and Mike decided to swing for the fences with an outside the box hire. It just didn't work out.

It is a little scary especially after a one year failure but many of the most successful OC's started with little to no play calling experience.

There wasnt much left to pick from when we signed him. i'm pretty sure he was the last OC off the board?
