Not trying to be snarky or anything, and I am sure you may have mentioned it in previous posts, but...can you tell me who YOU would like to see them hire as OC?
Honest question.
Frank Reich. B Schotty.
I think Reich paired with Udi would be cool or Fraley matched up with him.
I'm less enamored with the guys that dont have experience actually calling plays. Not that they cant work, moreso just that we've gone to that well twice now and it hasnt worked.
I just think having a brain for strategy and being able to function at a high level in the chess match that is football on Sundays is more important than play design or experience leading a position group. Leading a position group at a high level of proficiency is an important skill and absolutley is an indicator of future potential at the coordinator position, but again, calling plays and having the mental capacity to manage the myriad complexities of coordinating an offense on sunday and leading 30 guys week in and week out... its a much bigger responsibility than 'pass game coordinator', qb coach or o-line coach.
That being said, of the guys we know that are being considered, Kubiak is the one i am least interested in simply due to what he has shown to date as a coordinator. Minnesota was bad in some critical areas despite having talent when he was there. And yeah, last season was a tough one for the Saints due to injury, but injury is part of the deal. We were without most of our o line for stretches this year and last. We have also been without our starting RB for significant stretches. Thats just part of the game. You still have to find a way to be productive. The fact that his offense was SO bad on 3rd down and was horrible even before New Orleans on 3rd and in the redzone doesnt inspire confidence.
I like the things that are being said about Udi, but can he stand up in front of a group of 30 guys and inspire confidence? I dont know. I am hoping he does great in the interview and shows that capacity. I think the 'photographic recall' aspect of his talent could be a game changer. But if that extraordinary ability comes at the expense of interpersonal skill... what good is it in a leadership position?
We will see how he presents. Im actually pulling for him.
Fraley - i just dont know enough about how he sees the game holistically. I think its fair to assume he knows the ground game, so i think he could do good things for our rushing attack.
He certainly has been exposed to a top notch system and coordinator. But i see a lot of this as being provided an open book in a math exam. You have the info, its right there for you to look at, but if you dont know how and when to apply the formulas, having the textbook right in front wont help of you
