If he can keep his weight in check you will see more of that. His weight was never an issue at San Diego State Aztecs BTW. So I'm surprised to see that as an issue. He is around 230 lbs. now. I would like to see him around 225 lbs. His speed is even more at that weight. He played at San Diego State between 220 lbs. - 228 lbs. He can go faster than what you saw in the last game even. But his speed is starting to get there and you can see it.
There was an adjustment time period with him. You line him up differently than how he was used in College. So the system is different and he was adjusting to that. Also he has gotten better in pass protection. It's not that he can't do it. It's that he had the ball in his hands at San Diego State. They didn't ask him to block much in College. So that was an adjustment for him too. He has gotten better at blocking and in your system. Not every player in NFL history is a huge star out of the gate in game 1 of year 1. It's really not strange or unusual to be better in year 2. In fact it is more the norm than not.
Penny is the fastest and most explosive RB on your roster. He can go faster than even what you have seen. I've seen a faster Penny than this. I would like to see him at 225 lbs. He is even faster there. I'm glad he got a nutritionist and is taking that seriously and addressing it. Weight was not an issue for him at San Diego State so I'm surprised to see it. But he is dealing with it and that is good. He is a 220+ lb. RB who can score from anywhere on the field. That is rare. Those guys don't grow on trees. You have a good lineup. You have thunder (Carson) and lightning (Penny). There is nothing wrong with having that in 2 different backs. In fact it's more common than not in the NFL. Those are usually different guys. I will add also that it's a misconception that Penny can't run fast at 220+ lbs. He is a big, powerful, explosive and fast RB. He was NEVER a little RB. So he doesn't need to be skinny. But I think 220 lbs. - 228 lbs. is super ideal for him and it's how he played at San Diego State. He had his top speed at that weight. He just doesn't want to be well above that.
Depends on if you're entertaining giving Carson an extension next off season, because believe me, he's going to be asking for one.
If not? Then I agree with you, you play hardball with Carson with the safety blanket of feeling comfortable with Penny as your primary back going forward.
But if you ARE going to give Carson a big extension to remain here for the next 3-4 years as your bell cow back? Then sorry, I'm entertaining high pick trade offers for Penny.
I'm not keeping him through the remainder of his rookie contract to take 10 snaps a game if I can get a 2nd rounder for him and use that for another starting position of need.
I believe he can definitely be that guy for you. As he grows in comfort in your system and becomes more used to things like he is. Also he is beginning to be a better blocker. Most importantly he is keeping his weight in check. This allows him to utilize his speed. Which is the best aspect of his game no doubt. As long as he keeps that in check and down he can be your guy going forward.
He will give you more big games. He will also give you explosive home run speed which is always useful for an NFL team. He adds another dimension to your running game. A fast home run dimension.
You could always franchise tag Carson if you want for a year or 2. Penny is still on his rookie contract for 2 more years after this one. So realistically it's not like he is actually costing you that much in the overall scheme of things. Having both for a while is not the worst way to go IMO. But yes Penny can be your guy. As long as he keeps his weight down. That's all he needs to do.
