You don't trade Rashaad Penny for anything. He hasn't even scratched the surface yet of what he can do. You got a glimpse in the last game. If he can keep his weight in check you will see more of that. His weight was never an issue at San Diego State Aztecs BTW. So I'm surprised to see that as an issue. He is around 230 lbs. now. I would like to see him around 225 lbs. His speed is even more at that weight. He played at San Diego State between 220 lbs. - 228 lbs. He can go faster than what you saw in the last game even. But his speed is starting to get there and you can see it.

There was an adjustment time period with him. You line him up differently than how he was used in College. So the system is different and he was adjusting to that. Also he has gotten better in pass protection. It's not that he can't do it. It's that he had the ball in his hands at San Diego State. They didn't ask him to block much in College. So that was an adjustment for him too. He has gotten better at blocking and in your system. Not every player in NFL history is a huge star out of the gate in game 1 of year 1. It's really not strange or unusual to be better in year 2. In fact it is more the norm than not.

Penny is the fastest and most explosive RB on your roster. He can go faster than even what you have seen. I've seen a faster Penny than this. I would like to see him at 225 lbs. He is even faster there. I'm glad he got a nutritionist and is taking that seriously and addressing it. Weight was not an issue for him at San Diego State so I'm surprised to see it. But he is dealing with it and that is good. He is a 220+ lb. RB who can score from anywhere on the field. That is rare. Those guys don't grow on trees. You have a good lineup. You have thunder (Carson) and lightning (Penny). There is nothing wrong with having that in 2 different backs. In fact it's more common than not in the NFL. Those are usually different guys. I will add also that it's a misconception that Penny can't run fast at 220+ lbs. He is a big, powerful, explosive and fast RB. He was NEVER a little RB. So he doesn't need to be skinny. But I think 220 lbs. - 228 lbs. is super ideal for him and it's how he played at San Diego State. He had his top speed at that weight. He just doesn't want to be well above that.

Depends on if you're entertaining giving Carson an extension next off season, because believe me, he's going to be asking for one.

If not? Then I agree with you, you play hardball with Carson with the safety blanket of feeling comfortable with Penny as your primary back going forward.

But if you ARE going to give Carson a big extension to remain here for the next 3-4 years as your bell cow back? Then sorry, I'm entertaining high pick trade offers for Penny.

I'm not keeping him through the remainder of his rookie contract to take 10 snaps a game if I can get a 2nd rounder for him and use that for another starting position of need.

I believe he can definitely be that guy for you. As he grows in comfort in your system and becomes more used to things like he is. Also he is beginning to be a better blocker. Most importantly he is keeping his weight in check. This allows him to utilize his speed. Which is the best aspect of his game no doubt. As long as he keeps that in check and down he can be your guy going forward.

He will give you more big games. He will also give you explosive home run speed which is always useful for an NFL team. He adds another dimension to your running game. A fast home run dimension.

You could always franchise tag Carson if you want for a year or 2. Penny is still on his rookie contract for 2 more years after this one. So realistically it's not like he is actually costing you that much in the overall scheme of things. Having both for a while is not the worst way to go IMO. But yes Penny can be your guy. As long as he keeps his weight down. That's all he needs to do.

One good game doesn't mean all of a sudden we were insane for not taking a 3rd rounder for Penny, if that was the offer.(He has had more than one good game)

And let's not forget Penny wasn't in the game because he deserved it, he was in the game because Pete's desperately trying to save Carson and not wear him out before the playoffs.(Carson fumbles..Enter Penny)

So yeah, great run by Penny. But he needs to have about 10 more games of what we saw yesterday before I'm willing to not take a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him.
(Even Carson does not have 10 good games like that)

A Penny for your thoughts.. :snack:

total nonsense
How so?
At least where i highlight Carson does not have 10 games like the one
Penny has is true..He'd have 1,500-1,700 in a season if he did.
So how can we expect Penny to have 10 games like that?I just think
that is unfair..I think he could but come on!

Well with Carson they have to defend between the tackles, with Penny you play outside in a bit more lining the DE's out wider or LB's to turn him back inside and boom he is contained, the change of pace works well for how teams prepare for us. Penny has not shown he can break thru traffic inside the tackles at the NFL level consistently.

That's what he needs to show yet.

If the reports are true, I am glad we didn't trade him. He is still young, and I would rather be deep at the position than thin. Looks like we have plenty of draft picks in 2020, and I think he can live up to a third round value. Just not a first. If he doesn't put it all together by next year, then I will be more critical of him. I say give him the ball.

He's showing it a bit more in the last few weeks, though.

Ride the hot hand. Until the last couple of months or so, Penny wasn't the hot hand. He was overweight and unfocused. His supporters will shove their piano fingers in their ears and go lalalalala but the words came right out of Penny's mouth.

Now he's got his head on straight, so he should get carries. His detractors were correct before, and wrong now. His supporters were wrong before, and correct now.
