Seahawks offense is scoring 26.6 ppg and ranked #9.

Seahawks defense is at 23ppga and #19.

What rank do you think the defense needs to be for a deep playoff run?

I say 10 to 12th ranked.

Need to get that scoring D down to around 18 PPG the rest of the way. I don't care about overall ranking, but we would win a majority of games holding teams under or around 18 points average.

The Hawks were at their best when they had a top 5 D. The offense was complimentary then . This D is the weak link as far as post season is concerned . IMO

The defense is real bad

15th in yards per game, 19th in points.

Seems like an average defense to this point so far to me. May improve with Reed coming back as well.

Adjectives like "real bad" are usually reserved for teams ranked closer to 30.

The defense can and will likely get better..It's
not how you start but how you finish..
They can get hot at the end in playoffs..
Think of the Colts and Giants teams it does
happen.

Real bad in the sense we are about to waste an MVP effort by a QB. QBs don't have seasons like this regularly and unfortunately we don't have the team to capitalize on it.

Did you run this before or after the Rams game? Because if you ran it after the game when we are the only team that's played 5 games, it's not accurate at all. Let the other teams catch up to us and run it on Tuesday.

The defense will get better. Jaren Reed coming back and more games with Ziggy and Clowney getting comfortable. More upside than downside.

Our defense has performed admirably the last two weeks, and is improving IMO.

Poor execution on prevent made us look worse than we were thursday.

On offense, we just scored 30 points and put up 426 yards against a quality opponent in a divisional game.

And most fans are mad.

Why? Style points. Because we passed 23 times.

Averages are still pretty accurate.

So, we're just gonna lump the points given up directly on special teams & the other teams' defensive scores against us & charge them to the defense as if they were at fault? That is 14 points right off the top of my head without even needing to put any thought into it bringing the "real" average down to 20.8.

By the same token, you need to take points scored directly by the defense(Clowney's pick six) off that average for a real number.

I only bring this up because this thread seems to be a question of is our defense "good enough" to take us to the promised land based solely on how many points are posted for & against on the standings page.

We are 4-1 and right in the mix for a playoff spot and division title.

Teams with average defenses and MVP type performers at QB win superbowls all the time.

Lets see how it plays out in the coming month or so. We just beat the NFC champs. Which NFC team do you think we are incapable of beating?

The defense is already getting better without Reed. The last two games are both significantly better than the first 3.

We played the Rams and the Saints, Bengals with a fresh offense not seen as well as the Cardinals, I think we level out going forward now, that's a lot of offense in 4 weeks to deal with and figure out.

Saints may not have had Brees but Payton was still there to scheme, we were missing pieces on defense and are still putting it together, to be where we are right now is pretty good given a bit of luck so far and keeping their heads down and grinding.

I gotta agree with some of the others, I'm optimistic in the direction this defense is trending. Ansahs not upto speed fully yet. Clowney is the dline at this point, Woods is doing what he's doing, Jefferson is getting the benefit of playing with Clowney and making the most of it, looking like a very capable role player. Reed back should shore up that line and make everyone around him better. The lb'ers will be fine. Shaq looks great this year. It's the other 3 spots of the secondary that are meh, McDougald does have the skillset so I am looking for him to get right, at least, right-er. TT and Flowers are gonna be the weak links but the dline getting more pressures should mean less time for them to have to chase guys around. I'd say right now we are a middling d but with the potential to be a fringe top 10 d.

I ran it last night and it was just off points per game and not total points. Yes it will and can change.

Had it not been for quite a few miscues, the average ppg would be lower. If Thompson didn't mistime his jump in week 1, if Carson didn't lose 3 fumbles in 2 games, if they make that tackle on the punt return in week 3, and if Pete had gone for it on 4th & 1 on Thursday night, we could be singing a different tune.

I know those seem like a lot of miscues, but all of them could have easily had a different outcome, it was just bad luck that all of those happened to one team in a short amount of time, cause that stuff doesn't happen very often. Hopefully they've shaken off the rust and continue to play like a well-oiled machine.

With that said, Pete needs to get D to not let receivers get so open, especially in crucial moments. I seen so many busted coverages on the Rams' last drive of both halves.

The question that runs in my head right now is "Do we have the manpower to run Press Man Defense?". I dont think we have that available at the moment. I think we are running base to get them used to that scheme and possibly expand that to press man later in the season. The secondary is still looking a bit lost out there at times. They are closer but at times...yanno.

Usually a top 10 defense is good enough to get you there. I don't think ours can get it done atm unless we start playing better. Even the chiefs with all their offensive production still didn't make it out of the AFC a large part because of the patriots defense. They probably won't again this year b/c the patriots have one of the best defenses I've ever seen since the LOB.

Russ is probably the least supported QB making a push for the superbowl this year. Bottom ten O-line with a bottom 10 pass defense, and one of those will cost us either too many games for the seed we are going to need, or be the reason we lose a game in the playoffs. Petes playcalling has also been suspect this year but I have more confidence in him getting his shit together. imo if you take wilson off this team this is a bottom ten NFL team. The saints are a perfect example of a team littered with talent at all phases of the game. Brees goes down and they are still a top 5 NFL team.

This year weve had more lucky breaks than we usually get and are thankfully 4-1. I think we are good enough to beat anyone in the NFC anywhere, I just don't think we are consistent enough to win all types of games every week. Our defense can't keep us in game if we have another shit show like we had againts the saints for our offense contend. every team always has a few games like this every year.

Teams I think that are more talented than us right now if you take the QB out of the equation
1) Saints (by far the most talented in the NFC, without brees this is still a top 5 team in the NFL right now)
2) Cowboys
3) Packers
4) Eagles
5) Rams (imo Goff has been handicapping them)
