Riq Woolen Apology

At least he owned it and apologized. I mean it was a terrible, terrible mistake that would have NEVER been forgotten if we lost but I don't think I'm on the same level of "no forgiveness" that a lot of fans are continuing to stand on. Overall he has been pretty good this year and if he is owning it and wants to continue then I support it. At least for the SB. Super short leash if he messes up again though.

The problem is that this isn't the first time this kind of crap has happened. They've been told all season long and have seen that garbage called against themselves as well as their opponents. When will he learn? What's it going to take?

Some things in life just aren't forgivable, and in my book, that was one of them.

Having said that, I think that the refs did a very good job of officiating. There were a lot of close calls, in particular PI calls on both sides, that they could have called but let go.

I wasn't necessarily talking about Woolen. He's seen his teammates flagged for it, his opponents flagged for it, seen other games this season where they've called taunting penalties. All teams were informed before the season that they were going to crack down on this crap. Woolen did it right in front of a ref and in front of the Rams bench.

Sorry, as sincere as it may have been, I don't accept his apology. Had he been an employee of mine, I would have fired him on the spot.

Then to make matters worse, he gets burned for a TD on the very next play.

The thing I dom't understand is why didn't MM pull him for a few plays after that? It's a typical move, in part bc the coach wants a few words w him, but more importantly, bc he's going to be distracted by it. Stafford knew this, targeted him immediately and turned it into a quick 7 points. So this is all on Woolen for his awful behavior, but MM whiffed too, on not getting him off the field quickly.

Glad this whole episode did not cost us the game, but it did allow the Rams back in when we had our foot on their throat.

At this point, we have to play him as he's the best option we have and gives us the best chance of winning. I was just saying that I don't forgive him.

I agree. Woolen was still hot, arguing with his teammates and coaches on the sidelines. If I'm MM, I would have sat him at least for a few plays and let him cool off.

yeah this is a good point but hindsight is 20/20. Everyone was so shell shocked by what just happened and who knows if coach really was able to get the full idea quick enough over on the sideline. Easier to see it on infinite replays on television

I agree with what everyone is saying and it speaks well of Riq's character that he owned it and apologized.

HOWEVER..

He needs to be on someone else's team next season. He nearly cost us the Super Bowl last night over straight up ignorance. Can't tolerate that kind of buffoonery in any organization that is trying to be the best.

yeah what this brings up for me is what are we willing to pay him at this point? it's a contract year and he's been good so someone is going to give him a bag. might not be worth it for us to give him a big payday. I'd imagine the SB is his last game with the team

I can't imagine how thick the .net vitriol would have been regarding the taunting penalty had Seattle lost. Would have been one of the most ballistic things we've ever seen around here, and entirely justified. Fortunate we stayed with it and kept them scoreless in the final quarter.

Riq will almost certainly finally "get it" now, and I don't think trying to unload him should be a priority, if at all.

Na happens way too much, same as DK. At some point it's just who you are. Between his lazy technique, cerebral meltdowns, and head scratching coverage and tackling efforts at the most crucial times, he is a weak link on this defense, and does not fit in with the culture Macdonald is building here.

I cant imagine he'll be back next year as anything other than a depth player. If at all.
