Rice on the worst contract list

So Grantland put the Rice contract on the list of the worst as it relates to value for your money.

Thoughts on this?

My thought is that looking at it from the current roster I would tend to agree that it is overpaying for what the Seahawks is getting, but considering when it was signed it was something that was desperately needed and part of the rebuilding

Rice is a difference maker who is adept at getting open deep downfield. He might be expensive, but makes us a better team, and we can afford to keep him this year.

Rice had some of the most spectacular sideline catches i've ever seen last season, not to mention his ability to get seperation..

is he overpaid, talentwise not in my opinion, in our current scheme and how much he's targeted, i'd say probably...

Barnwell didn't look at the Rice contract in context, which is pretty much par for the course with Barnwell and why I don't take him too seriously on some things. As someone that sometimes leans on raw numbers out of context too much in order to make my evaluations, Barnwell is the Godfather of doing that.

So out of context, he has a point. In context, it gave us a true #1WR threat that helped Golden Tate to grow into a true #2WR threat and it gives us a guy who can make huge catches downfield and on the sidelines. The guy is a master of two feet/one knee on the sidelines. Just great body control and awareness. It's not his fault that the stats don't reflect that because Seattle runs the ball more than any other team in the league.

Sidney Rice worth every penny we paid him when he caught that game winning TD against the Patriots. He may not get that many catches because of the offense we run, but there were so many countless clutch passes he made for TDs, FDs, often times being there went Wilson had to go in Scramble mode.

Stupid. It's not Sidney's fault that he gets limited targets in our offense. Sid catches EVERYTHING, and also seems to come up with a clutch catch.

He is expensive...no question, especially at another position where we have so much money invested.

That's why the Harvin situation is so big. He is a player that requires gameplanning. But even without Harvin we still shredded your defense and everybody's else's from the backend of the season right up through Atlanta. (Our defense lost that game after our offense put them in position to win).

I hope that's the thought for defenses this year. Miller, Willson, Tate and Baldwin will kill.

And Harvin wasn't on the team last year when the Seahawks shredded the 49ers defense.

I was discussing this with a friend earlier today. Look at the other WRs on the list, and you'll see they offered WAY worse performance for their inflated salaries than Rice. It's a stretch sticking him on here; we're a run-first team that only got a good QB starting last year.

Compared to the pass heavy rest of the league, yes, he is overpaid. But that's the price we pay when we have a run heavy offense that needs reliable wide receivers to make the most of their opportunities when the ball comes their way.

Yeah, that was a pretty bad post, especially considering Russell Wilson's superior passing stats when he stayed in the pocket.

In both games, Lynch had 100+ yds. Again, not counting Harvin, but no-one else in the SEA receiving corp / TE group scares you. Russell's ability to extend plays allows these guys to get open, but none of these guys are 'ok we absolutely need to game-plan against him' types.
