This is coming from maybe the biggest Pete Carroll fan in the world, so you know that I wouldn't be saying this if it weren't total truth.
This organization is filled with people doing their jobs for the first time at this level, and it's filled with players who are playing in these schemes for the first time.
Mike Macdonald has never head coached at any level, and he's handling playcalling on top of that.
Ryan Grubb has never called plays at a pro level.
Scott Huff has never coached OL at a pro level.
Aden Durde has never coordinated a defense.
Geno has never played in this scheme.
OL has never played in this blocking scheme.
Defensive terminology is entirely different.
Now, we have not experienced a new head coach in close to 15 years, and we haven't experienced a first-time head coach in... I mean, maybe ever?
This is the greenest staff Seattle has ever employed. Obviously filled with talented football coaches, but it's all new.
Many of you were ready to move on from Pete Carroll. Not an especially rare viewpoint in this fanbase. But keep in mind - with Carroll, there was one thing you couldn't say, and that was that he was inexperienced. That man had been around the block several times and was a CEO type. We all had some disagreements with his processes behind specific hiring, playcall decisions, scheme decisions, etc. but he obviously had command of the organization and that responsibility was neither new or intimidating to him.
The contrast between a Pete Carroll staff and this team is going to be.. jarring, at first. It always was. We knew what to expect with Pete. With this team, I don't think even *they* know what they're expecting.
Embrace the learning process and cherish the positives that pop up to build around. Every lump is a lesson. If they keep the right attitude, keep pounding, keep moving with purpose, we'll be good. It'll be hard in the meantime, and it'll be hard in a way we're probably not used to seeing.
We gon' be alright. Just about everyone in power on that staff doesn't even have their sea legs yet.
