Rankins vs. Coleman (really fun film)

Lots of snaps where Sheldon Rankins is lined up right across from Shon Coleman. Too guys we've been spending a lot of time talking about.

Pretty much. Coleman is such a massive, massive man, but he moves so well.

Coleman is one of my favorite OL this year. On a good day, he looks like D'Brickashaw Ferguson. He's clearly got the tools to play LT a a pro-bowl level in the NFL. The reason he's not a top 5 pick is because his technique needs a lot of work and his effort is inconsistent.

He's a risk. Reminds me of Greg Robinson in the boom or bust aspect. Except that Robinson was a super high pick, and Coleman will likely be taken in the back half of the 1st.

I counted 1 play (in the 6 min I watched) where Rankins was across from Coleman and "won" the battle, resulting in a pressure. He stonewalled Rankins and destroyed the rest of the linemen. Rankins success came from other positions on the line. If all his tape looked like this, I'd be all in on Coleman at 26. A few plays where he pops the DT off the snap and somehow manages to get back to block the end. Moves really well for a big man.

Rankins game tape is all over the place. There are games where he looks unblockable, and games where he looks like just a guy.

I like Coleman a lot; while he pretty much dominated Rankins, Coleman struggled against the talented Louisville DE Devonte Fields in that game.

I want Coleman at 26 more than anyone else. I just worry this will be like 2014 when Bitonio is there and we traded down and grabbed Richardson.

Coleman had a decent game, but he held a lot, as did the other Olinemen. Multiple flags for holding, and multiple INTs by Auburn. That QB was bad, or he was feeling pressure?

You can see where arm length comes in to play with Coleman's longer arms holding Rankins off.

I don't see Coleman being worth any more than a 3rd rounder. There were multiple blunders where he dove inside and let a free runner at the QB or RB. He may have the size, but can he play the position? I'd need to see more than just this one game. Might be another Jason Smith.

Coleman will turn 25 during his 1st NFL season after spending close to 3 years battling cancer. That will put him at 30 already the 1st year of his 2nd contract "IF" he turns out to be a good pro. Too many other OL prospects in this draft with simialar skills and body type that fit our needs. As a person having lost a parent to leukemia however, I will be rooting for the guy to have a long successful career and life.

As for Rankins, he played all over the D-line and was asked to do alot of different things with varying results. I think he will be a better pro than collegiate and could turn into a Kawann Short type 3 tech. He showed the quickness at the sr bowl in drills and If he shows it at the combine in explosion drills he may be long gone by 26. Personally, he is on my short list of players I want at 26.

If you could see in the future and would have known Russell Wilson would be great, but at the time of his draft he was going to turn 25 during his first season would you pick him?

If the player is going to be good or you feel he is going to be good you would be silly to ignore those thoughts because of a ~2 year age difference.

Bruce Irvin was a 24 year old rookie. So was Russ. With Pete you almost have to consider that 80% of drafted players are going to be one contract players. If they become elite, they'll get re-signed, but most will be one and done. So the bottom line is getting 4 to 5 good years from them.

Shon will give you that. He's already physically mature and comes from a pro style system. He's pro ready.

Wilson being older due to being in another professional sport for a time at a position that can play at a high level past the mid 30s doesnt really compare to a guy that fought for his life for over 2 years and there is no guarantee he won't have to again.

Age and medical aside, in that clip he shows too much tendency to get those long arms on a guy and lose balance forward. Okung has the same tendency and that kills against real edge rushers or guys that play the run well from DE. Age and some warts on his game lump him in with guys we can get 2-3rd round for me. I would much rather land a 26-27 yr old FA to compete at OT and draft a guy later.

Rankins is much more effective inside and not an edge rusher. Looks like Louisville was lacking on the outside this year after Mauldin left and it kept Rankins from showing his true talent as a 3 tech. I would love him at 26 along with a few others on defense.

Good points. As I'm sure everyone knows by now, I'm a huge Rankins fan. Really didn't now anything about Coleman until recently, but he might be a perfect fit for us in the 3rd. Teams will consider his age and medical history, along with his production and draft accordingly.

With Russell Wilson, they wanted him badly and considered taking him earlier, but they played the odds that other teams would not draft him because of his age and size and it paid off big time. Coleman's draft stock isn't so much about how Pete and John draft, as it is about the predictable way the other 31 teams will draft.

I'd love to get this guy and build him up, but only in the correct spot. I hope they learned their lesson after reaching for Britt. Wasted draft equity that led to Russell Wilson getting beat up. Lose/Lose.

Heard Rankins interviewed on Sirius a little bit ago. What a great kid. Pat Kirwan made reference to Pete when talking about guys that would love Rankins game and personality. He is my draft crush at this point.
