I'm sure it had nothing to do with Hurtt, and a Seahawks defense that went from 12th under Norton Jr in '21 to 25th in '22 and '23, under Hurtt.
Hurtt had the pieces, he just didn't know how to put them together. It wasn't that Brooks was a bad player who didn't fit the scheme, it was that the scheme was shit. Norton Jr's scheme wasn't great either, but it was certainly better than Hurtt's, and let's be honest, they were both implementations of Carroll's outdated scheme and philosophy.
Though he never quite lived up to his draft position, Brooks was a solid contributor.
Starting only 6 games in his rookie 2020 season, his performance was limited but good. He was named to the NFL All Rookie Team.
In '21, his only full year under Norton Jr, he started every game, and set the Seahawks franchise record for both tackles at 184, and solo tackles at 109, records he still holds. He tied the franchise record for tackles in a single game, at 20. The overall defense was problematic, giving up a league worst yards allowed.
In '22, his first year under Hurtt, he once again led the team in tackles, and solo tackles, despite tearing his ACL in the penultimate game. The team declined to pick up his fifth year option, a reasonable call.
'23 saw the return of Bobby Wagner, who led the team in tackles for the season. Brooks had a remarkable recovery from his ACL tear. He was originally slated to return mid-season, but started the season opener. He came in second for tackles that season, partially due to the recovery, and partially because he missed two games, due to injury of his other leg.
Probably the most damning thing to be said about him was that he was not retained by MM.
But there is little appreciation for subtlety and nuance on this site. When I say Bradford and Brooks aren't as bad as people make them out to be, people respond as if I said they were all-pros. Jordyn underperformed his draft position, but probably wasn't worth what the Dolphins were willing to pay. In retrospect, his performance has matched the contract they paid him. I would still rather have EJIV at only 750k APY more, but he is hugely underpaid.
