i pretty much agree with the op. another point about this is think of it this way, there's usually lots of safer ROUND 1 picks that will still be great contributors. but were talking 2nd 3rd and so on. the degree of safeness and still getting top notch talent is diminishing by the round. there isnt tons of roster space open, which means a player must potentially have enough talent to beat out someone on a talented roster.
just to pick at the "wont contribute now" part for arguments sake i think thats redundant. I see your point because yes, it often takes time to develop talent. but the point of talent is that it has the potential to show at any time, aka poppa petes philosophy about always competing will always give those highly talented guys to contribute right away. i dont really see the argument safe vs risky either way in later rounds, i think 3rd and on the gap is pretty shallow either way, its more hit or miss generally imo.
i personally hope they draft a balanced TE for depth and due to good talent pool this year for this type of TE's, and also to groom to fill zachs shoes in the 2nd. a big nasty dt in the 3rd, OT/ big reciever in 4th, explosive rb type in 5th. whatever else is icing on the cake. honey badger anywhere between 5 and on would be sweet. i just dont see them drafting too many guys that have low ceilings.
