Who are the players people think won't make the 53 and have a good chance to be snuck on the PS? The roster is so deep I expect a lot of waiver claims.

I expect it to be very offense-heavy, specifically O-line. Limiting it just to current roster members for now, I'll go with Derrick Coleman, Phil Bates, Cooper Helfet, Jared Smith, Ryan Seymour, Michael Bowie, Benson Mayowa or Ty Powell, and John Lotuleilei.

There were reports here earlier that Jesse Williams' chickenlegs would preclude him from making the active roster.

I think he is definitely practice squad material, however.

He would definitely get picked up by another team.

Not if the other teams have been reading .NET.

I think Ware ends up on the practice squad. Just not enough room for him on this roster.

Jesse Williams would never make it through waivers, IMO. If he's not healthy enough for the 53 man roster I expect the Hawks to stash him on IR to 'redshirt' for a year, or perhaps make him their IR-DFR guy ('Designated for Return') depending on the rest of the team's injury situation at the end of camp.

Agreed, although I expect Harvin will be the IR-DR guy and Williams would just be IR and see you in 2014.

There's no need to waste the IR-DFR spot on Harvin when he's already on the PUP list; the IR-DFR needs to be saved for a player injured (or pretended to be injured) after the reduction to 53 players. Only players with injuries predating training camp qualify for the PUP designation, such as Harvin, so there would be no reason to use the IR-DFR designation for him.

Could be - but it really depends on how he heals, or in this case the projection of how we think he is going to heal. If you PUP Harvin, he misses the first 6 games but also has to be practicing before the ninth week of the season (for us, Buccaneers game week and game on November 3, which is well ahead of his projected return availability). We would the have another three weeks to get him back on the 53-man roster.

Pretty tight window.

^^ Nope, wrong. Harvin would have to miss the first six games, but he would then have a five-week window to begin practicing. Once he resumed practicing, Harvin would then have another 21 days to join the 53-man roster or miss the remainder of the season. Harvin could make his game debut as early as Week 7 or as late as Week 15 under PUP rules. So this course of action provides Harvin the widest berth for returning without counting against the 53-man limit in the interim.

PUP rule: http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/ ... -pup-rules

Cool, I'm glad they changed it. But "counting against the 53" is not the catch, because he wouldn't count against the 53 on IR-DFR either.

So it really comes back to which player they think has the best chance of coming back and contributing this season. Pointless to fuss about for us fans, they know the reality of the players conditions much better than us and will make the best decision based on that.

Never said he would, and never said that was "the catch" either.

No, it does not come down to that at all in Harvin's case, because he's already on the PUP list which gives them the most flexibility for when he could come back, so he's already in the ideal place being on the PUP list. The IR-DFR decision comes down to (as you termed it) "which player they think has the best chance of coming back and contributing this season" amongst players who get injured after the cutdown to 53, which goes right back to my original post on the subject. Harvin is not moving from the PUP list.

Not sure if it's just the way you are, but you come off a little defensive and prickly. Just a recommendation....chillax, it's all good. You are a relatively new poster, so I'm not familiar with your posting style. It's all ideas and opinion exchange.

Two cents. :th2thumbs:

Anyways, I'm not going to expend much energy in worrying about it either way, because as I said they have the ground truth and insight which we don't. We can rely on this front office to do what's best.

We can label it and psychoanalyze it any way we want, either route means no games for Harvin until much later in the season.
