That's a terrific fit for both Poona and the Bills.

"In McDermott’s system — like most 4-3 alignments — the defensive line is unleashed on the opponent’s backfield (and quarterback) in a relentless one-gap onslaught. There’s little to no two-gapping for defensive linemen.

McDermott’s (and originally Johnson’s) idea is that quick penetration into the opponent’s backfield from any one of the defensive linemen is the fastest and most efficient way to disrupt the offense. This scheme doesn’t “protect” linebackers against pulling guards. It’s designed to stop run plays before the pulling guard’s block can have an effect at the second level."

I couldn't be happier for Poona. He is back with the defensive line philosophy he thrived in.

Love Poona, but he seemed like a bad fit last year for what we were trying to do on defense.

Wish him well, but I kinda like that we're turning the D-line roster over and trying to get younger and more productive fit wise.

Change and trends keep me awake and engaged. Otherwise we would just be nodding off to reruns.

Poona is an interesting case, he had a great first year, then slowly went downhill. Coaching, scheme, or just Poona? He went from a star in the making to one year prove it deal.

Your summation has a few flaws.

Poona was an undrafted free agent find of John Schneider's crew. His rookie snap percentage was only 23.2% in his first year 2018. His snap percentage then climbed in succeeding years to a peak of 63.3% in 2021. Then settled in at 55.5% in 2022.

As posted earlier*, scheme change & change in points of emphasis necessitated moving on ..... as was the case with Ryan Neal and Cody Barton. They all play their best in a defense that utilizes the best of their skill sets. All 32 NFL teams are unique.

I was never really big on Ford, not a big loss at all (to me). Shouldn't be too difficult replacing his production. Seattle finds dudes like this on the regular it seems. Good luck to him, hope he gets his ring this year, cause Seattle is on the come up.

New Bills defensive tackle Poona Ford’s one-year contract could be worth up to $3.25 million, per a league source who provided the details to The Buffalo News on Friday.

Ford, 27, signed with the Bills on Wednesday after spending the first five years of his NFL career with Seattle.

Ford’s deal includes $1.5 million in guaranteed money and has a salary cap hit of $2.25 million.
Ford can earn incentives based on playing time and sacks.

Toffee's summation is fair in my view. 2021 was Ford's best season as a pass rusher, but his run defense and effort is what made him an initial fan favorite and that has slipped steadily over the years from stellar to good to fair to poor.

Poona didn't play a ton in 2018, but he looked great the entire way through the process. Many projected him to the roster even before the first preseason game and he played with a relentless motor that immediately made him a fan favorite. 14 stops and 21 combined tackles with zero missed tackles on just 124 run defense snaps.

The run defense slid steadily over the next four years until last season where Ford's run defense was an outright liability. Tackle miss rate of 12.5%, just one more stop/three more solo tackles than his rookie year despite three times as many snaps. His 2022 valuation was just 40% of his cap hit. While people are quick to blame the scheme change, as you mention, that doesn't explain either the trend or why he was forced to take a significant pay cut (and role reduction) on the open market this off-season.
