Rule #1

If the route is complete and it is time to improvise, always, always work back towards the quarterback. You absolutely must get between the defender and the quarterback. (Got it Sydney??) ie. Watch a basketball game sometime and watch how teams play against a trapping defense. It is all about giving the passer an "out". You do that by breaking toward the man in trouble.

Rule #2

If the quarterback is running and is past the line of scrimmage, your defender is playing man, and your defender has his back turned to the quarterback, forget rule #1. Rule #1 no longer applies because the quarterback is ineligible to throw a forward pass. Further, do not break the route to block. Keep the defender in coverage mode, chasing you down the field, until he is aware the quarterback is running with the ball. An "acting" job is in order.

Rule#3

If you are running a go route between the sideline and the numbers, and the quarterback is extending the play to complete a pass, leave at least 3-5 yards of buffer from the sideline so that the QB has a larger window in the field of play.

That is all.

Review the Raiders v. Chargers game for examples of coming back or working back to the QB. Numerous examples in that one.

Would love to have Denarius Moore here in Seattle.

Didn't we do all of this last year? What changed, may be the timing changed and before they turn to come back the play is over maybe. We used to do it really well and one thing Pete stressed about it to be extra efficient to support our scrambling quarterback. I seriously think it is the timing or mental clock on when to complete a route versus when to start running back.

What would have been better for Rice would've been to come back and then shoot back up the field. The defender was coming back with him and he would've been behind him for a possible score

In the John Elway days, Denver always had one guy who went deep when Elway scrambled. He also IIRC, went deep and away from the direction Elway was scrambling due to Elway's arm strength.

Had Rice broke deep he might have had a chance, hell had Rice done anything other than stand there.....

Oh well I guess, time to move on. No one goes 16-0

Pretty hard to know what they're telling Sidney in practice. I'd have to think he'd be cut if he was totally screwing up and not doing what they tell him to. They usually don't keep guys around that are THAT bad.

Sidney also had knee work done prior to the season (iirc) so maybe its just a slow start for him.

I know I was ripping on him pretty hard yesterday too./
