Pete's on now
Talking about how him and John work together to find players with the right mentality and physicality.
On Practicing late on Competition Wednesday....said they are on a schedule. Their time for practice coincides with the game time. For Wednesday we cover game plan issues, but we stress competing with each other. Lots of one on one work. Offense vs. Defense right off the bat to get the tempo and speed so the rest of the practice will be a high level. They keep score so someone will win or lose practice.
About loving our brother, perseverance and finishing....Says they are right on that. Their focus is on the team. Says they focus and battle to play for each other. Said it's not about how you start, it's how you finish
On what it's like having his son on his staff...said it's a treasure to watch him develop and grow as a coach. Loves to compete with him to try and win football games. Said he cherishes it and feels fortunate.
On Junior Seiau (sp?).....Said from SC he was a heralded college player through is professional days. Said his number 55 was a big deal. Said his style of play...being aggressive and a risk taker. Called him a remarkable kid
On Browner leaving...said he was a core guy for us. We loved what he did for the team. Our guys really care about him and continue to talk about him in an endearing manner. It was a shame we couldn't maintain it. It's a shame you can't always continue with the guys you want.
The Atlanta game opening national eyes for Wilson.....Said we had discovered what he could be late in games earlier than that. Said he thought it was the Chicago game. Said it was a great statement. Thought the Atlanta game was still a significant occurrence.
What changed to make things click this year and on winning in the NFL.....said we had a similar situation last year where we lost connection to fundamentals and we rediscovered it then and did the same thing then. Different story line but still had that turning point. on Integrity of winning.....it should be understood we wish to remain at the highest level of integrity. Said that we will always make mistakes, but integrity is how you handle those mistakes and if you face up to the truth and own it. (Really great answer....if you get a chance to listen to the full version I recommend it)
On Sherman and Revis....They both make plays in crucial times and they see things before other people would see them. They don't play the same style but get similar results. Said it's a great opportunity to watch both of these guys.
Why he's so at ease and does his team reflect that.....said it's a question of reps. He does this a lot. Said he is comfortable in this situation and hopes our players are because we've practiced this situation. Said we trust that the preparation gets us ready for this. Said we don't know the results of the game but we know how we are going to play and that allows us to enjoy and embrace the opportunity and make the most of it.
On Lynch missing an opportunity to communicate with fans and how important it is to give back.....says you are seeing a player being himself and not being what others want him to be. Said maybe you don't agree with what he's doing, but he's not comfortable with that but it is who he is. We talk about supporting who he is all the time and he is an incredible team member.
On Wilson's spacial awareness on the field and how we use it. We recognized early that he's a tremendous all around athlete...basketball, baseball, Tennis, golf and all that. We have a quick passing game, play action stuff and a whole other realm that he can demonstrate. Said he makes great choices when he comes out of the pocket. He's at his best when he can create and take it to another level.
on 2nd opportunity coaches in the NFL....Coming from a retread multiple times, it's just he experiences. It's such a difficult job first time. There is so much involved in your first time that you're going to make mistakes. What doesn't happen is guys in their early years they don't get long enough to get it figured out. Gave John Fox as an example of why a team would love to hire a guy who's been through it all.
On the tackling video they made. Said they thought there was a lot of room to expand the coaching of the tackling part of the game. Said they made it to see what would happen to see if they could help the game a little bit. We've found you can tackle with the shoulder and they wanted to share it. They share it through huddle company with coaches at other levels. Said when they shared it with the league they got a call from Madden (made a joke that it sounded like frank caliendo (sp?) on the phone) and said Madden wondered where that type of thing had been. Said they've taken a lot of the language from rugby. We can practice tackling without helmets on.
On repeat appearance is there a danger of complacency....said he doesn't get that mentality. He said it takes a tremendous amount of effort to get there once and another effort to get their twice. We are fortunate to be here and we aren't going to miss the opportunity to go for it.
That's all for pete. Should be some players coming up
Updating as he answers questions....
