If I was a GM or owner hiring Pete Carroll as a HC in 2025 i'd be hiring the OC and DC for him. I'd want coaches with experience who could take over at very short notice. I wouldn't be giving Carroll full control. That's how I look at this hiring.

Yes, Eagles players complained that Kelly was a "control freak." Also, coming straight from college, Kelly probably treated the athletes like college kids and tried to impose stuff on them. We've seen that approach doesn't work in the NFL with a lot of coaches, like Urban Meyer and Greg Schiano.

It's likely not as much of an issue as an OC as it is as a HC where you have to set the tone and establish the culture.

Chip also let it known that he wanted to be an OC in the NFL. He is not after a head coaching gig collegiate or otherwise. It seems like he just wants to be a coordinator and run the offense, not worry about culture or other such issues.

I actually think this was a very solid hire by Pete Carroll. He's run some successful offenses in the NFL and he's changed his approach quite a bit. He has a more run heavy offense that isn't as uptempo as it once was, which was the biggest issue with Kelly.

This is probably Carroll's best hire at OC since he's been back in the NFL.
