I'd like to apologize for my dissing the sports culture of Seattle, I just get sick of some of the vitriol here, but that's my issue clearly and what to expect on another board. Yesterday was rough hearing about Davis, honestly.
Man usually it's injuries(knock on wood) that make you want to cry in the offseason, this is just unreal.

I think players across the league have to be looking at decisions like this and debating with themselves and loved ones on the merits of playing an extended career in the NFL. Seems odd that the 9ers have had a rash of retirements this year but I wonder how many more players are close to stepping away from the game?

Borland played all year wanting to retire before calling it quits this off-season. I think this is just a ripple of things to come.

Good post. Don't forget Locker and Worlids this off season too.

Thanks. I remembered there were others but they didn't come to mind. Worlds is the one that stands out more to me than Locker, since Locker couldn't stay healthy and was on his way out in Tennessee.

I could only imagine how I would feel if one of the Seahawks core players decided to walk away in their prime.

Thanks for "manning up". You are one of the better 9'er fans.
Even as someone that doesn't like the niners, even I can see you guys just can't catch a break right now, and shake my head.
Now I just hear the niners traded Andy Lee for a 2017 7th rounder. Damn!

Oh well, at least Baalke has a lot of draft picks going in to next season. They've worked so well for him before.

Im still trying to figure out what one hurt the most.

Willis - bad feet.
Davis- very good in run blocking ok in pass block
Lee- pro bowler but expensive.
Justin- bad shoulders
Gore- legend but inconsistent last couple of years.
Crabtree- joke of a reciever in my opinion
Borland - decent LB but who knows what year 2 would have been
Harbaugh- Good coach brought a loaded roster built my others to its winning ways.
Fangio- this one I think will hurt.

One thing has all these in a bowl. Money they were all very expensive.

I shouldn't laugh. I will, but I shouldn't. It feels like I am mocking a handicapped kid when I laugh at the 49ers this year. They have had more bad news than Mrs Sullivan.

Though it is speculation on my part, I have thought, for some time, that there is likely an inherited philosophy, from the Eddie Debartolo days, of keeping tension on players and coaches.

I acknowledge the current administration as very aggressive about winning the contract negotiation. And, I recognize them as very insistent on the inclusion of stressful provisions. But, I highly doubt this current administration has the same skill that Eddie Debartolo did in his day with the philosophy he introduced and administered. And whereas Debartolo was productive with his philosophy, recent attempts to emulate Debartolo may prove to be counterproductive.

Davis’ contract was filled with de-escalators based on making weight, attending workouts, and achieving 50% playtime. Per a league source his salary had already de-escalated $500,000 due to lack of playing time in 2014, which happened because of injury, and was set to lose more due to weight issues. Had he not attended 90% of the team workouts this year he would have lost another $250,000 in salary, which may have been probable.

It’s a bit strange to see so many players on the 49ers team retiring when nobody else around the NFL is doing it. San Francisco may put more pressure than any team in the NFL on players to earn their money by actually being healthy which I guess could be a reason, though that is nothing more than a guess on my part. Davis had $1 million in salary tied to being active on Sunday, which can’t happen if you land on IR or are not fit to play. There are other teams who have similar clauses for players, but San Francisco probably has the highest numbers in the NFL.

Funny to read these links in retrospect, especially the part about Cohn giving the A.J. Jenkins draft selection an "F" grade and everyone freaking out about it. I guess yards per catch in college can be one relevant measure of a receiver prospect's future probability of success.

The Jenkins pick will be scrutinized throughout his career (or at least until he goes over 1,000 receiving yards in a season).

I agree and it couldn't happen to a better team. Unless it's Pittsburgh. I'd include New England but they're well on the way to Hell already and it will get hilarious once Bill and Tom leave and they go back to where they belong at the bottom like before those two cheats entered the picture.

I'm not sure which city and people I hate more....Boston or New York, it's a toss up seriously. Their arrogance is sickening. Pittsburgh is well named so I'll leave them alone because it's not fun kicking an old broken dog.

TBF Cohn of course ended up being correct about Jenkins, but it was the basis in which he made the evaluation that everyone was making fun of him about that summer. He had decided for some bizarre and always unexplained reason that yards-per-catch was basically the only metric you needed to rank college WRs. It was incredibly Cohn like in how strange and declarative it was.

In any case, even years ago BASG basically hit on what folks like Marvin and I have been saying about Cohn since we've been posting here:

Except Davis is hitting (repeatedly) on something writers and readers have been quietly saying in different corners of the interwebz for months, years. Even if Grant had an unfamiliar surname, his writing would’ve come into question. Strident views without logical backing only signal laziness, not courage. (The most important way to judge college wide receivers is yards per catch? Really?) Bite-sized morsels of high school imagery might get people to read and comment, but they don’t tell the story of Davis and his teammates. What investigative jewels have the Cohns unearthed and brought to the surface? Ted Ginn’s wearing white tights now? Evil Jim Harbaugh wasn’t all that concerned about whether or not his first round receiver walked across a stage in Champagne, Illinois? Is this family furthering the conversation or forcing players and coaches to put up walls unnecessarily?

Fans, players and readers deserve better. Bloggers deserve better. With the walls between players and athletes tumbling down 140 characters at a time, we need to reexamine how these groups communicate. Grant may think he “opened up a line of communication” with Davis. Instead, he’s closing the door on many bloggers from less fortunate bloodlines.

Yeah, yesterday I was thinking about how this off-season for the 9ers is going to make a VERY GOOD 30-for30 doc five or ten years down the line.

If I were a journalist I'd be all over drumming up contacts to try to do a book project on the behind the scenes of it (although as with a doc, I think you'd need to wait for five to ten years to get people to really talk, even anonymously).

It's definitely one of those "too crazy to be made up" kind of off-seasons.

A year later you're all whining about Bowman and how little class Seattle fans have.

The irony of Marvin complaining about people (Sherman) being allowed to play in games due to pending appeals to their suspension is the sweetest of ironies. Didn't he cite due process for Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Chris Culliver and Ray McDonald? I'm sure he'll do the same for Miller in the hope that he won't miss games.

See why we might get a good laugh out of all of the suffering?

Damn Laloosh...been holding that for 3 years? LOL.

Wasn't my finest hour. I can admit that. I was PISSED...but don't spin it into something it wasn't. The difference you had conveniently left out was that Sherman had already been suspended at that point and it was on appeal. That was before a lot of the facts had come out. Still, I jumped the gun there and I admit it. I've never kept it a secret that I really can't stand the dude.

As for those other 4 cases, we are talking apples and oranges. We are talking about players with OFF the field issues that were much more of a grey area....

....ya know what?

I'm not even gonna do this. This is only going to fishtail into a sea of other posts and I really don't have the inclination to have YET ANOTHER argument about those players in question. All it will be is my response, followed my 4 or 5 peeps calling it spin, followed by Laloosh responding, followed by several posters say "boom goes the dynamite' or something like it.

In the end, it won't matter a damn what I say because you guys really don't give 2 sh*ts what I say on the topic. Its just about wanting to feel morally superior...which was my initial point about being sick of the entire "our organization is superior to yours" high and mighty crap that has become so prevalent.

Peace.
