Pass Rush

I know I know. Some of you are saying “what pass rush”. I don’t disagree with that question at all. Other than Brandon Jackson touching down a slipped Lamar Jackson behind the LOS, there were no sacks for the second week in a row. No matter how you slice it, that’s a horrible stat and not a good trend.

As bad as it’s been, I saw yesterday what could have been at least 4 sacks on most any other QB. Jackson is special in his quickness and abilities to outrun most people. If they had almost any other QB back there we would be talking about how the pass rush took a major step forward.

Does this mean good things over the remainder of the schedule? I hope so. How many games will we get with Clowney, Ziggy and Reed all playing together? So far, none. With all three playing and healthy, will it make a difference?

It was way smarter to let Jackson throw yesterday than to actually rush him hard and leave gaps. He did nothing from the pocket.

Maybe somebody has done the legwork on this, but perhaps it is due to QBs getting it out faster against the Hawks than they normally do because of the D scheme of keeping everything in front?

Clowney's a top 10 DE, but because our D-line is so mediocre he's being double teamed just about every down. In fact I think he's leading the league in double teams.

So I don't blame Clowney, I blame the rest of the guys on the D-line for not helping him out.

Shoot, I'd like to just see consistent pressure on the QB. The secondary isn't solid enough yet to have a QB back there cooking up steaks.

For damn good reason - pass rush and disrupting the pocket is the engine that drives defensive success. You HAVE to pressurize the opposing QB in this league.

So many expert fans in here were so excited to get Ansah . I never understood why Carroll and Schneider would want an old injury prone player recovering from an injury when signed . Stupid move again . Clowney at least is playing every week ...so far .

I think the risk was worth the price. I think Ziggy had the highest or one of the highest sack rates in the league last year. He's a beast just hope he can get right.

He got no shortage of help on the Texans' d-line.

He's a very, very, very good DE, but has never been much of an edge rusher.

His potential and his price were the driving reasons for adding Ansah, combined with genuine need for a rush end. That's the end of that story. However, it is obvious he's apparently done as far as contributing much to the pass rush. if not that he's not truly healthy and hasn't been for some time. He was injured and recovering from significant surgery when acquired and has been unavailable for a lot of the year and so is not dialed in with the D either. The season is almost half done and the team has been without Reed's presence inside to push the middle of the pocket, the results have been underwhelming indeed. This whole situation could improve but how much is an honest question.

Ansah is reportedly getting healthy, Reed has return from suspension, and Clowney has played adequately w/o much help from the other 3. For me his pass deflections, blocks, and run stuffing ability compensate for his lack of sacks. He does get pressure and makes plays when he can't and that is hard to gripe about. Clowney is a player I'd want to keep on my roster, he is a good base end. For him some realism as far as his true value would be necessary though. He will get high level compensation but never top dollar.

I suspect the edge rush from the right side will never be a huge factor this season as I have little evidence so far that Ansah will ever again deliver what he has in the past any longer. Creativity from Norton may be necessary to provide adequate pressures. I somehow doubt he can make that happen. Coaching up of the basics such as staying your lane and tackling seem beyond him this season.

All of us can see there has been little to be enthused about with the pass rush. The FO is as much to blame on this as was the explosive increase in DE compensation of last season.

The team needs a true Leo presence and hasn't had one for some while. To me Clark was a streaky rusher who at least was solid against the run and got pressure but only sacks in bunches against weaker opponents. The team needs that player who must be accounted for on each snap.

I think Ziggy is at that point where he may be functionally healthy but not stress healthy yet with the injury, those that have had a severe injury to a joint know what I mean. That stress healthy takes time as rehab and scar tissue has to now be broken down and rebuilt for stress level.
