Our Defense Struggles with Mobile QBs

Tyrod Taylor, DeShaun Watson, Marcus Mariota, Dak Prescott, Cam Newton, and Jacoby Brissett to some extent.

I've heard (710) that part of the problem is, our Defense is fast, until it comes to mobile QBs, and they seem to do a lot of communicating at the line, which slows down their reaction time.

And then I heard John Clayton say it again on 710 last night with Danny, Dave & Moore. "They do a lot escaping [the pass rush]."

It does.

But it's also part and parcel with our style of defense. We have a penetrating front. With 4 rushers, you have 6 gaps in a 5 man line. So two gaps are unfilled.

On a pass plays, we drop our LBs into deeper/wider zones than other teams, because we run a cover 3.

So with a mobile QB, they generally have one of a couple lanes to choose from to scramble forward. And a particular liability is the fact that the DL, in their attempts to penetrate a gap for pass rush, can be susceptible to being sealed off cleanly.

I don't necessarily think we have more or less trouble with mobile QBs than most other teams. I mean to say, that we'd have to establish a baseline for these mobile QBs, and then compare our performance. Right now we just know how we perform and we seem to struggle against them more than others.

But for all we know, we're good against mobile QBs too. Or at least better than other teams that struggle more.

We struggle with mobile, ACCURATE Qbs. Every defense does

Which is why I named the QBs that I did. Cam Newton has some horrible games, but against us he always plays lights out.

Career completion percentages

Marcus Mariota 62%

Dak Prescott 66%

Tyrod Taylor 63%

Jacoby Brissett 61%

Deshaun Watson 62%

Cam Newton 59%

Cam's is the lowest, but the games we've played him have been tight, with us either getting a late game turnover, or getting blown out then playing catch up while they go in to prevent mode.

IDK ivotuk, SCam was pretty awful against us last year. I think he had a 44% completion rate and one long TD bomb the play after Earl got hurt for the season. He did ball out against us both times in '15, but otherwise he hasn't been good. Kaep is a good example of a not so accurate mobile QB whom the defense contained really well. Although, even Kaep was shredding us at the end of 2016 after he improved his accuracy and decision making.

Tbf with Dak, we've only played him in the preseason, so we'll see how he does. IMO he's a more careful version of Watson who will burn us but won't throw picks.

Pandion's right about the misdirection. An underrated point about the game is that BoB had a bye week to gameplan and install a completely different offense for Watson. The Texans came into the season with Savage as the starter so BoB had to quickly change the offense to accommodate Watson and the extra time off allowed him to refine it more. Our defense was caught out of position so badly so often it gave me flashbacks to the Falcons games from last year.

Part of the reason is we are so fast, misdirection can cause over pursuit in the wrong direction.

We don’t really adjust our base for anyone so when mobile guys break the pocket they have room to run because everyone else is committed to coverage.

Also mobile guys can extend plays and find holes in our zone defense. Rodgers is tops at doing this.

Has Cam really been that good against us? He was in his magical 2015 season but outside of that haven't all our close games against them been the result of our offense struggling and winning via scores like 13-7?

Mobile qbs like that give teams fits.....
