Am I right in thinking that if we don't sign him next season, we will get a comp pick if he moves on, something like a 3rd anyway. If that is the case we really only gave Kearse and our 7th to move down to their 7th?

Not really. The 2nd rounder we gave up is next year, while the comp pick (third rounder or whatever, that largely depends on the contract he signs with a different team) would be in two years. Also, we'd only get the pick if we don't sign a comparable free agent.

Jefferson hasn't played well in the offseason. He was awful in last nights game. Plus Jones got hurt so they may be looking for some depth at DT.

This is going to end up being the league's best pass-rushing team since that Giants team that had Strahan, Umenyiora, and Tuck.

You can pinpoint some of our franchises struggles to the lack of passrush. Remember when Clemons couldn't play against Atlanta in 2012, when Avril went down in the 2014 Super Bowl? Avril and Bennett have been productive but have done so playing too many snaps. Love that they are depth now.

Speculation is that we give up a second rounder if we re-sign him, a third if he leaves after this season

Now the defense is complete. Legit pressure with the front 4 leads to the turnover feast this defense thrives on.

They could be historically great this season.

This should be a fun season to watch unfold.

Wow! This is a huge win for us. I can't for the life of me figure out why the Jets signed off on it though. Other than tanking it this year. :irishdrinkers:

Seems the Jets aren't going to resign him next year and they've had some personal issues with him. Plus, he apparently doesn't fit in their defensive scheme very well, so I think they are just trying to re-coop a draft choice and Kearse was a throw in. I doubt they think they will be much of a competing team so why hang on to dead weight.

Man I hope so, great comparison

If Richardson was considered dead weight, could we have more please?

But can he contribute in ten days?

Not like he is some rookie trying to learn the kick step here. I am going to say, yes, he can do more than contribute in 10 days.

Jesus, I will be a good boy this year. Make it so. I've lurked the Packer forums and the fear smells sweet and we're not done JS is a total madman. You never get DT's of this level for this price Especially a young one that we can totally resign. If motivated he's a complete run/pass monster like Calias Campbell but just 25? Dude could be a defense's centerpiece for the next 10 years.

This is why I can't understand the Jets' reasoning behind this trade. Makes no sense. There must have been some really bad blood behind the scenes to have this happen. One doesn't purge a key cog in the defense if one is rebuilding. You cut the bad parts and build around a core of good players.

It doesn't take bad blood to prevent a player from re-signing, and sometimes contracts for even great players can be big enough to get in the way of getting full benefit of said player.
And in realizing that he wasn't going to re-sign, here's something to help understand the reasoning.

Richardson hated his team.

Richardson hated his team.

Aside from them paying him millions of dollars, rightfully so, Jets org is poop.

Richardson wasn't a key cog in their defense.

In 2015, despite his Pro-Bowl talent, their overall strength along the defensive line, and their clear needs at other positions, the Jets went out and did the most Jet like thing imaginable. With the 6th pick of the draft, instead of addressing one of their multiple areas of need, they went with the "best player available," and drafted Richardson's clone, Leonard Williams.

When Williams turned out to be everything he was advertised to be, they were left with three dominant linemen, who play, essentially, the same position. It seems they could have chosen to switch to a 4-3 defensive scheme, but the Jets, being the Jets, stubbornly stuck with their 3-4 which left Richardson as the odd man out. They tried moving him around, but he never found success out of his natural 3-tech position.

So, what you really had, was an extra cog with a starter level price tag, and a bad attitude about how the Jets had treated him over the years. Jets were moving on from him one way or another.

Great news if this turns out to be the case. I still have yet to see a single word regarding the conditions of this 2nd round pick. It's kind of an important detail that many seem to be overlooking. Anyone find anything 24 hours later?
