I really don't think being a Yankee helped him. The voters are all baseball beat reporters. They aren't impressed with the Yankees. New York doesn't get any more voters than any other city. If anything, there is a lot more Yankee-hate these days among small market teams.

I do think that @Chapow may have a better theory, that there was anti-Mariner sentiment by Houston and Dallas voters, who voted 4-0 in favor of Judge over Cal.
