The role of Special Teams, in the NFL, is steadily being reduced.

Ugh. If a team is down by 6, and they get the TD, the extra point is the one last attempt for the opponent to keep things at a tie. I say let it be. It's not like it hurts anything or takes time off the clock.

Wow that made absolutely no sense. If you fail you get a point taken away????

how about just leaving the game alone? Don't do what the NHL does every year...it will be ruined.

Roger is fixated on trying to make a lasting name for himself somehow some way, be it a international team, whole sale rule changes, or putting almost half the league into the playoffs.

If you read the article, you little glimpse of how these guys think. We all hate this idea -- I bet 99 percent of football fans would reject it instantly out of hand. But the idea makes a weird kind of sense when you read how it's presented. They're right -- the PAT is all but automatic and kind of a waste of everyone's time. If the league really wants "excitement on every play" as its calling card, then yeah, the PAT is pretty lame. There were only 5 misses all year long, and you can't even return them when they get blocked. Ho hum.

But for them to not instinctively *know* that this idea's a total turd shows a certain level of out-of-touchness in the Big Boys' offices.

A much better idea (that everyone will still rightly hate) is to just get rid of the kicked conversion and make everybody go for 2-pointers all the time. Now *that* would add excitement.

Whenever articles like this come out, I always wonder what these discussions were like 80 years ago. Once upon a time, in order to score a touchdown, you actually had to place the ball on the ground in the end zone (hence the name). After that, the ball had to be all the way in. "Break the plane" came later.

I wonder what people thought of 'break the plane' when that became a thing? Did people cry foul about removing the actual TOUCHING part of it? Did people accuse each other of ruining the game? Did someone shout "it's called a 'touchdown' for a reason, Forsythe!"

The game has changed dramatically in its existence. There used to be a single-point play (there still is in a few varieties of football). I'm guessing that with every alteration, there was equal uproar from fans, owners, and players alike. But once the 'weird newness' wears off, do people keep caring? Does anyone out there lament that they changed the timekeeping rules so that the clock continues running (after the ball is re-set) after you go out of bounds? That's a pretty big change, did all of you even notice the change (I know I didn't until this year)?

I guess this just doesn't seem like that big of a deal, in the long run. It feels weird and kind of ridiculous, but change often feels that way. If they pulled the trigger, would you stop watching because you don't get any more extra points? Or would you forget about it after the first year? How long until the announcers just stop talking about it all together?

Keep it or don't. Football is great for a lot of reasons, and extra points aren't one of them.

Meh. Agree it's a bad idea. It's all about TV time. The networks want shorter telecasts, so the league is fishing around for ways to shorten the game.

here's another thing they could do. variable-point field goal attempts:

60+ yards: 6 points
under 60 down to 50: 5 points
under 50 down to 40: 4 points
under 40 down to 30: 3 points
under 30 down to 20: 2 points
under 20 yards: 1 point

but not in denver. increase each range by 5 yards: 65+, 65- to 55, 55- to 45, etc. down to 25 yards or less for 1 point.

also, in cities like seattle maybe decrease each range by a yard or 2 because of the thicker air.

I love the reaction of the Rogfanboys! 8) Full defense mode at all times to defend Rog's honor, it's cute actually. :stirthepot:

Talk about dumb rules.

So it's 3rd and 8 at the 25, last minute of a game, team is down 3 points with 1 time out. Their options would be:

Go for the TD because you want the full 6 points for the win, but you can't be short because that would lessen the points for your field goal and not give you a chance for a tie.

Taking a knee, using your TO, attempt a FG from the 32 for 3 points and a tie.

Or, losing 10 yards to the 35, so the FG attempt would be from the 42 for a 4 point FG and the win.

How about the other part of the article... Making certain penalties reviewable? I think that is a great idea, considering how many time our guys have been called for illegal hits and they aren't.

Oh, do tell; can you quote me defending Goodell in any way in this thread?
