They should have been padding the outside of the helmet for years. A mandated 1/4" in thick pad on the helmet actually provides 1/2" of padding on impact, helmet to helmet.

This looks like a great idea. Have to eliminate the hard surface contact somehow to absorb the g forces.

I didn't notice anything about the weight of the helmet.

Hopefully even if it's a tad heavier the NFL will mandate the change, if it proves to safer on the field.

Stop using your head as a weapon might be the biggest help.

Exactly............

Plus, you can still get a concussion from chest to chest hits. The body stops, the brain continues to move.

Your not going to eliminate everything, but you can sure eliminate a vast majority, the crumple zone helmet and spring back looks like a winner.

I've been wondering why something like this hasn't been done. I'm not an expert on helmet design and concussion prevention by any means, but the ideal would be a helmet that absorbs and diffuses the force of the impact without transmitting it all the way through to the skull. Seems like a step in the right direction.

That's pretty bad ass looking. If that one ever gets adopted and the Raiders move to San Antonio they will have to become the Armadillos.

As unfortunate as it is, the look of the helmet will always be as big a factor as the safety features. At it's heart the NFL is entertainment and it follows that fans won't want their players looking like dorks.

Pretty cool, amazing difference on impact..

Ok I must be dumb - both of those look incredibly dangerous.

They are both dangerous, but the white helmet is distributing the blow within the helmet and reducing the force to the head (like an internal crumple zone) while the blue (assuming traditional) helmet is taking the shock, but the force is still being applied to the head (sort of like putting a phonebook between your baton and the victim you are beating - still, lots of damage being done)

When hits like this are still legal? I mean c'mon NFL. I'm terrified for both players here, one for the guy getting hit obviously, and for Shaizer who's going to end his career and potentially paralyze himself lowering his head like that and striking ball carriers with the top of his helmet.

They should make an LA Rams one as a moving gift for Wes Welker. He certainly needs it the most.
