In reading the ESPN article it seems the Dolphin's would be dumb to cut Suh before June 1st. According to the article, "Suh's release also will take a large contract off Miami's books. Suh carried a salary-cap number of $26.1 million for the 2018 season, including a base salary of $16.985 million.If Suh is designated as a post-June 1 cut, the team would save $17 million against the 2018 salary cap. Releasing Suh now would save the Dolphins just $3.9 million against the cap."

So... false alarm? Maybe they're that dumb?

They can release him now but have him designated as a post June cut for bookkeeping purposes.

If that is the case, they certainly don't get the cap relief until June 1st (well, May 12th, but it's known as June 1st).

The league allows each team to designate up to two players per year as a June 1 cut for cap purposes prior to June 1. It’s the one concession that was given to the players as it allows a player to be cut in March and have time to explore free agency but have his cap hit spread out over two seasons, thus creating more cap space in the current year.

If they cut him today they have it all on their books today. But if they cut him in June they have dead cap of $9.1m this year and $13.1m next year.

No thanks. Just pushes the rebuild back another few years. This team has sustained too many losses and has put itself in a terrible situation by making terrible trades and giving up too much draft capital. They need to continue to clean house this year of bad contracts and get younger. They will be in much better position in next years draft and have plenty of cap space to reload this team for another run. You don't break away from MB and Sherm and then do this. They are simply not going to be able to compete this year with the NFC elite.

MB and Sherman being traded/released are not signs of a rebuild..

Both are aging vets with long histories of disruption and now are coming off injury. At no point did someone say "lets replace them with young guys"

Why can't replacing them with "healthy bodies and different attitudes" be a part of the change while still continuing the culture of being competitive?

This. They may just want to get it out of the way in 1 year rather than kill 2019 as well. Also, there is talk about drafting a QB and moving on from Tanehill.

If they sign Suh at age 31 after dumping Bennett at 32, that would pretty much squash the "getting younger" excuse for Bennett.

To be fair Suh is 31 for this entire coming season, and Bennett turns 33 during the season. Still not "way" younger but that's a bit more than just 1 year. Also Suh is a generational type talent and will be a HoF player. Michael Bennett was a great player but no where near a HoF player at any point of his career.

Not sure how you derived at this conclusion. I said it's all equal, I'm not the ones on here with Hawk colored glasses not taking into account the baggage Suh comes with.

Again, that's WHY he's being cut. Anyone who isn't taking those reasons into account isn't being honest about this potential signing.

Suh is one of the only veterans who would lessen the blow of losing Sherm for me if we're talking dominant older players.

Think of it this way - Suh is better than Richardson even though four years older. They will both likely want around the same $$$. He was the highest PFF rated player on the Dolphins last year and constantly demands double teams while beating them. Seahawks will not lose any comp picks if they sign him and will gain a 3rd if Richardson walks. You're getting a better, veteran player who kicks the crap out of the opposing offensive line for about the same money as well as a future 3rd. Plus, a middle of Suh, Wagner, and Thomas is very impressive.

I'm all on board with this move as long as he doesn't want something like $18 mil a year.
