First of all, I'm just not sure I could do any better than this, unless Denzel Boston drops to pick #64 (which he didn't in this mock draft). I drafted out of the 1st round and threw in the 6th rounder to get an extra 2nd and 3rd rounder. Explanations below:
Pick #39: Chris Johnson
Don't turn your back at this CB! Johnson ran a 4.40 at the combine with a 1.54 split, 38" vertical, and 10' 6" broad jump. He's 6'0, 193 lbs and has 30 5/8" arms. He's very sticky in coverage and has a nice burst of speed to recover, his main game is zone but he's also nice in man and has a nose for the ball when he actually looks for it. He'll need some work on that but I think he can learn. He's got an NFL comparison to Byron Murphy from the Vikings. He is a slight reach in the 2nd round and he needs to clean up a few parts of his game, but he's a strong tackler and I think MM could get the most out of this guy. He also has film of CB blitz and although he's mainly played outside, he does have some experience on the inside so MM can move him around and keep mixing it up to confuse the opposing offense.
Pick #64: Zachariah Branch
"Myrtle, we don't NEED another WR right now!!!" I think it could only be a great decision with Branch here at 64. He ran a 4.35 at the combine with a 1.5 split, 38" vertical, and 10'5" broad jump. He's 5'10", 180 lbs and has 29 3/8" arms. This guy is VERY twitchy and can pile up the YAC(kity yack, don't talk back!). He's played against SEC competition as a bulldog and he's not afraid to fight to get more yardage, very scrappy bulldog indeed! He's got nice hands and he was utilized at Georgia in quick-release playcalls (remember when we scream at the TV for our QB's to get the ball out quickly?). He also has experience as a punt returner, and he was praised at Georgia for his work ethic and passion for the game. He does need to work on his route tree BUT that's why you get him now, to learn under Kupp and JSN. He has an NFL comparison to Curtis Samuel, but I think he looks a little more Tyreek Hill. Can you imagine having our own home-grown Tyreek Hill?! PAIRED WITH JSN???
Pick #70: LT Overton
You want an edge? I'll give you an Edge! LT Overton comes straight out of Bryant-Denny stadium and is BPA for Edge here at pick #70. He ran a 4.87 at the combine with a 1.7 split. He's 6'3, 274 lbs and has 33 1/4" arms. He can line up almost anywhere on the DL which will give MM heart eyes
Pick #96: Michael Washington JR
Did you miss Chris Carson? Washington is the obvious choice to be next in line for our RB room. He ran a 4.33 at the combine with a 1.51 split. He's 6'1, 223 lbs and has 33 5/8" arms. He's a bruiser back with pretty great speed on top, and elusive when he needs to be. He has to clean up his fumbling issues, and he's got room to improve with his blocking but with proper training he can fix those things. With his power and agility, and paired up with Charbs, our opponents DLine aren't going to want to play anymore. He also has soft hands to be a reliable catcher on check-downs, so it wouldn't be out of the question to say he has 3 down capabilities as long as he gets better at pass protection.
Hope you enjoyed the picks, personally I would be overjoyed if we got any of these players...but as always, I trust John and Mike to make the best personnel decisions based on their scheme and playstyle, as well as the options available when and where they pick. LET THE DRAFT FALL WHERE IT MAY!
