Next man up only works when the rest of the team can help out the back ups. Our corners and linebackers did nothing to help the D-line.

No one likes using injuries as an excuse, but I've literally never heard of a team's entire starting D-line being out before. It's honestly impressive that we put up as much of a fight as we did. I'd use this game as an opportunity to improve, and just move on.

Assumed i was talking about you, did ya? That says a lot.
Well, the fact that I'm one of the ones being hard on our defense, and someone else called me a troll for being outspoken, yeah, it's a pretty good assumption. Nice "gotcha" though, derp.

6 starters, 4 of those some of our best/most impactful (Nwuso would be 5 but with having not played yet I’ll omit) certainly impacts the performance for any squad in the league. Harping on the secondary is pretty ridiculous with knowing that passing game was opened up by the Lions running the ball down our throats at will. We were missing key contributors in the middle and they exposed as they should. Didn’t just open the passing game but really opened up the play action. Add losing Love to that only exponentially made it worse.

Doesn't excuse blown assignments, bad tackling, and flat-out dogging plays in the secondary.
Blown assignments started when Love was knocked out of the game. Once again not being able to stop the run with them running right at our missing pieces opened all of that up. No just the passing game but even more the play action. Not claiming Seattle as one of those, but put any of the top statical defenses currently while taking away 6 starters (4 being some of the most impactful) against that Lions roster and the result will be very similar. Next man up is one thing, next 6 men up does not exist.

It's so easy to overlook what having a hole up front does to a secondary.

Your secondary can't both be your stopgap to fill all the holes your MASH unit of a front seven is leaving open AND stay completely on top of the passing game.

It's simply not a thing you can do in the NFL. You can get away with it, maybe, if the other team has a bad QB or no playmakers at WR. Maybe.

But that doesn't describe the Lions.

Some of you are rationalizing a bad performance. If you go off starters from the first three weeks, Seattle only missed three: Mafe, Williams, and Baker. Uchenna hasn't played all season, so let's not pretend his absence is why the defense struggled tonight. Similarly, they'd given up a TD on four out of five drives before Love went down. Yes, losing him probably hurt, but It's not like we were stopping them when he was in the game.

I figured out where you went wrong in this post. You understand football and you're using logic...stop it.

It's funny, as bad as the defense was (and yes they were utterly handled but the fact we were missing so many starters upfront is a valid point to an extent), we were a couple of blown calls from the refs from being in some sort of position to have the ball last needing a TD to win. Offense really balled out, it was a shame the last drive stalled within the 5 but without those 3 ref poor decisions (there were also some awful spots, 1 of which replay had to intervene to give us a 1st down), I think we genuinely had a shot at winning despite Goff being 100% on completions. That is crazy.

WOW, and I thought the Washington Wrestling Report was bad for all the negative that gets posted.

Ok. They certainly didnt play well, a lot of mistakes on both sides of the ball (mostly defensively). The point that i think everyone is missing is where they did play well. Even without our best guys on defense we did still get some pressure on Goff with guys that supposedly werent good pass rushers. We did get a key stop when it didnt look like we could. We also saw half time adjustments that got us back in the game (never happened under PC). Eventhough we did get gashed in the run game, we were facing the best RB tandem in the league (arguably), expect to give up some yardage without your run stoppers. Geno has now proven he is a legit starter and quite possibly a superstar. All in all we knew it was going to be tough but i saw some great things out there and the team is taking on a new version of itself and i like the direction. We get healthy and MM and RG keep implementing their system we are a real threat to dethrone the Chefs. IMO

Flame Away.

Not only did it not work they looked like they had no business playing in the nfl. They suck and I bet this year they don’t win many more games. I know they were missing starters. But this defense playing the first real offense couldn’t stop them for nothing.
You say "missing some starters" like it isn't really a big deal. I know it has been stated over and over but it's huge. MM had a young defense he'd put together over a 6 month period and less than a week ago , almost half of them were taken away.

Defense communication is major , not only was he playing guys who weren't supposed to start , they had no time to play together. Oh and against THE team that was 30 minutes away from the Superbowl last season. In Detroit no less.

They suck? Won't win many games?

I think MM is doing well for a first time head coach in his 4th game.

Keep the faith brother.
