As much as Russ studies and admires Brees, I wonder if JIMMY! was at the top of his "wish list."

You know Russell was in on the discussions, I mean, he had to have been asked about it.

I absolutely love it. Center is the most replaceable piece of the Oline and we did fine last year when he was out. We had zero red zone threats and no serious go to receiver. Graham checks off every question and finally gives Wilson an elite option in the passing game which they had to do at some point. You weren't going to get anyone like Graham at 31.

Great move by JS!

Your definition of doing fine differs greatly from mine.

We averaged about 50 yards per game more rushing with Unger than any other center.

We allowed less sacks per game with Unger than the other centers.

I said it earlier and I'll repeat it. Our current crop of guys are serviceable, but that is all. We need to address this situation quickly, be it through free agency or the draft. I don't doubt that Schneider has a plan, but we'll just have to wait and see what that is.

Kid are you factoring in who we played? I'm not so sure that stat isn't a little misleading to be honest. We also had other players healthy with a few of those games being at the start of the year when we had everyone. I'm sure its a downgrade though like you said, I just think the positives of finally having a viable red zone threat greatly outweigh the drop from Unger to Lewis. Hope that made sense, I'm still in shock. :)

Like I said, I like the talent that we are getting, but Center is often such an underrated position, especially in our system. Unger is responsible for making all the line calls. We need a better option than just Lewis. I have no doubt there's a plan, I'd just like to know what it is :)

I'm with ya and its a valid point. I've always thought Unger was slightly overrated, especially the past couple of years but I could be completely wrong. Regardless I hope we draft someone or bring a guy in for competition. Hopefully they have something in place.

And let me reiterate, folks, we do NOT have Lemuel Jeanpierre right now. His contract was up at the end of the 2014 year. He is an unrestricted free agent.

We need to either bring him back, find a new option at center, or prepare to go into 2015 with Patrick Lewis as our starter.

Schilling is also an UFA, so we are down to Lewis and no other options really. I do have faith there is a plan and it's still really early
Well Lewis is basically all we had for a lot of this year and we did fine

The results of our games were mostly fine, but as I stated to austin, we rushed for 50 more yards per game and gave up less sacks per game with Unger than with our other centers.

Sure, but when you only play 6 games and one of those is a 350 yard rushing effort against the hapless Giants, it will bump your average right up. We averaged 200 yards a game in the 6 games Unger played compared to 150 without. But we also averaged 160 yards a game in the 5 non-Giants games that Unger did play. And 13 sacks in 6 games (2.16 per game) compared to 29 in 10 - but 7 of those game in one game and 5 in another. 17 in the other 8 (2.12 per game).

When you are talking about small samples of 6 or 10 games, one or two outliers screw everything.

I really dont understand how anyone cannot like this trade. We get rid of a injury prone, dont even know why he was pro bowler Unger. Get an elite TE/receiver in return.

Our OL has always been garbage, Carp & Unger can easily be replaced just because of Wilson & Lynch special abilities. Lot of homerism here.

There go my dreams of getting Andre Johnson...

My guess is trading for Graham may have been expedited BECAUSE Johnson was rumored to be going to the Colts.

If you want to utilize Jimmy Graham correctly you have to allow him time to run a route and get open. The problem of having less than adequate time for Russell to throw is only going to be enhanced by Unger (and Carpenter) not being in the mix. While it's awesome to have a guy of Graham's receiving ability in this offense unless they now somehow address the offensive line in a major way I don't like this move at all.
I agree with all of this. I live in New Orleans and have watched a lot of Saints games. Jimmy has good top speed, but I wouldn't consider him quick off the line. He struggles with press and physicality at the LoS. He needs time to get open. (although, he does not need a large window - he's a beast at battling/catching the ball when covered tightly, and Breez can put it there. Can wilson?)

I'm intrigued and excited about what he brings - but his style of play minimizes play calling, IMO. With the saints, it got to be pretty predictable when they were going to run the ball: When Jimmy wasn't on the field, and when they were going to pass: when jimmy was.

Hmm. A Pro Bowl center and a first round pick for this guy and a fourth? What's not to love?

On the flipside, any of Graham's last 4 seasons production-wise would be the best season for a TE in Seahawks history by pretty much any measure.

They'd also be the best season for a Seahawks WR since Engram in 2007

Or Julius Thomas heading to Jacksonville

Of course.. Seattle was rumored to want Graham last season. Where there is smoke...

Has clever play calling ever been a problem for the Darrell Bevell led Seahawks? We've seen minimalist play calling for the last 3 years.

I also heard that the trade heated up on Saturday, so that would have predated any Johnson news

Overall I think it's a really good move. The draft picks aren't a big deal to me. Since we acquired Graham by trade, we still have a good shot of getting a good compensatory pick for Byron Maxwell, don't we? So basically, we trade a 1st for a 4th and maybe a 3rd (compensatory pick for Maxwell). Losing Unger sucks. Such a good locker room guy. But, I don't think they make this deal unless they are confident they can rebuild the OL. All Jimmy needs to do is play good football and he will win the respect of his teammates. Hope this doesn't backfire like the Percy Harvin trade.

Love this trade. Graham is a top 3 TE in the entire league and JPL is more then serviceable at the Center spot. I'm sure we will sigh a FA or so at the OL position too along the way plus the draft. I'm stoked.

Only thing that scares me about Graham is every year he gets nicked up. Nothing serious, but he always has lingering injuries. If you play fantasy football, you know what i'm talking about.
