Matt Hasselbeck: franchise quarterback or a game manager?

I'll add that I believe that Matt wasn't what I consider to be a true franchise QB.

He was very good one year (2005)... and he was pretty good for a number of other years.

Truth is, he just made too many bone-headed mistakes... something Russell is not afflicted with... thank god!

FWIW, even though Shaun won the league MVP in '05, I believe that Matt was the Hawks MVP that year.

Without Matt, the Hawks never make it to the SB.

If he was 'very good' in 2005 with a league MVP rb who tallied over 1800 yards and 28 total Tds, what was he in 2007??

Hass' career is basically Tom Brady's 2013 season every year bar one or two - a great QB with an unreliable WR corps

Did Hass have a lesser receiving core than Wilson? I don't think so.

They dropped the ball more but I also think he had better 1 on 1 guys and Darrel Jackson in his prime was churning out 1,000 yard seasons.

My perception of Matt was that he started off as a liability but then became a dominating force. His problem was that he wasnt consistently great game to game. For the most part he was a legit upper echelon QB for about 4 years. In 2005 he was spectacular, yes he had the best O line in the NFL and best RB had a lot to do with it but he delivered.
If he hadn't gone sideways with the BS that was going on around him with drops and piss poor officiating the Hawks would have won their first Lombardi. The Hawks were also playing with guys in the D backfield they picked up off the street prior to the SB. If he had the current D behind him the Hawks would have smoked the Stealers even with the BS officiating. I wonder how fans would view Matt if the 05 team brought home the 1st trophy?

I haven't seen Wilson do what Matt did when Matt was "on". Not saying RW cant, just hasn't shown it yet as he hasn't had to. I'm not talking about making a couple plays to win A game, I'm talking about carrying the team for a season. Speculating that he can is just that, speculation, not fact.
Matt's best game as a Hawk wasn't with the best line or back in the NFL. It was the win over the Saints in the wild card round of 2010. Every one remembers Lynch's run but Matt kept the team in that game. That was a game NOBODY gave the Hawks a chance in. I don't think RW would have done that with a year or two under his belt.

Notice the timing of Matt's throws, he isn't waiting to see it wide open. He was reading the D and anticipating throws, that is some thing that is lacking in the current Hawks offense. The Aints pass rush wasn't in his face but Matt was picking apart that D. Our D on the other hand was giving up a ton of big plays and yardage. Matt never had the luxury of the current Hawks D. To say that RW is head and shoulders better than Matt is ignorant. RW isn't elite YET. Not saying he cant be but he hasn't been asked to be elite.
Being an elite QB means that he has proven he can win games consistently year in and year out with out the D has had behind him. If RW were to take up 20 million a year ( elite QB money) of the cap the depth of the team as well as starting positions will take a hit. Putting the "elite QB" tag on RW seems way to premature. He has what it takes, but once he is payed elite money the depth of the team goes out the window as does bringing in and keeping top shelf talent. As I said, RW hasn't been asked nor has he shown he is an elite QB. People need to stop putting him on that level until it happens.

How quickly people forget the QB carousel before Matt Hasselbeck. Shame on you. Not many franchises out there aren't going to take a guy that is going to complete a really high percentage year-in, year-out, and get your team to the playoffs consistently. Call it what you want, I'll call it "winner".
