I haven't followed this guy at all. What's his deal? Why is he even available?

With his name recognition, I want to say he's an automatic "sign this guy up", but he's obviously available for some reason that's not good.

IIRC, Austin had some pretty serious beharvioral issues in college and questionable desire. Athletic freak of nature, but UNC has had a lot of those guys through the years that were all world athletes and poor players, usually because of wrong priorities. Sounds like Austin fits that MO.

If that's all that's wrong with him, sounds like Pete's kind of project. He's never been scared of that.

Austin's rookie season in the NFL was lost due to a torn pectoral muscle and last season, he barely saw any time in crucial situations.
Aside from the injuries that have slowed his progress in the NFL, many people feel that Austin doesn't work hard enough in practice and isn't tough enough in the trenches to be able to be an NFL defensive tackle
In the two years he's been in the league, the 24-year-old Austin has amounted for eight total tackles in seven games played

Seahawks are probably exploring what Austin can do.

Is all the tire-kicking we are seeing of late normal?

I mean, it seems to me that we're looking at a LOT of DT's in particular.

Absolutely normal. Every team in the league is bringing in players ... building short lists.

I remember quite a lot of buzz about Austin that draft year. If he can be got for cheap to fill a hole until Jordan hill returns, it might not be a bad idea...

I wanted this badly out of college. Would love to see us take a shot on him. He has his issues, but man his potential is quite good.

Looking at Austin 's old draft profiles, he's definitely an athlete, and his build fits the 3tech role, but he's shorted than we normally prefer and has tyrnasaurus arms.

This makes a lot more sense. Thanks.

One of the analysts I think does a really good job is the "Football Scientist.," KC Joyner. He does some great break downs and over the years his reviews of players have been spot on. He rated Marvin Austin very high and I really wanted us to draft him. But the Giants got him and he immediately went on IR. This could be perfect for us because he might be getting desperate and the man has ability. I never really saw any indications of desire or laziness in his Senior year at UNC, so those may just be rumors, or they could be legitimate.

I'm sure you didn't see any signs of laziness during his senior year, as he didn't play at all his senior year while serving a NCAA imposed suspension.

couple of his old draft scouting reports I stumbled upon.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/play ... al/1242977

Sounds like a candidate. I remember him now from that draft and I recall really wanting him too. He was an athletic freak who probably needed some more top level coaching to get his technique right. When i read things like "slow off the line of scrimage because of a tendency to stand up instead of fire out of his stance", but then read "Against Boston College, Austin breaks free of the guard and closes 5yds on the quarterback in one second (hand-timed)- causing a fumble that he almost recovers. His speed and athletic ability are somewhat unreal", that's a coaching problem. The physical ability is clearly there.

He's been in the league 2 years, but big man is ONLY 24. I can see Coach Quinn getting a hold of this guy and turning him into a wrecking ball in the right situation.

okay... I'm kinda getting excited for this...
