He looked like he was regressing. In hindsight, it was most likely our coaches not coaching him up properly and understanding his strengths and weaknesses. I never wanted him gone just for the fact that I'm tired of watching the Oline change so many pieces for years on end

It's not just a matter of wanting Lewis gone or keeping him. Were we willing to match the contract offer? If so, then who's not here now?

For the record the majority of of the non-Hawk media considered that signing a huge over-pay by Carolina at the time

He was regressing because they moved him from RG where he absolutely excelled as a rookie, and decided to move him to LG, and he was never the same.

I don't know which position he's playing with the Panthers but I'm guessing it's RG?

This board wanted Lewis gone they wanted Pete gone and they absolutely wanted Clint Hurtt gone…
Lewis doing fine, and Hurtt is helping lead the top defense in the league. If Pete wasn’t being paid for this year he would probably be leading some other team to the playoffs.

Oh boy. D-line coach and defensive coordinator are not the same. Hurtt was not a good coordinator. Pete was completely stagnant for years and it was time to move on. Macdonald was the right move. Lewis was also regressing here and his resurgence could be completely due to his new coaches, no one knows if he would be good this season if he stayed but I certainly wouldn't trust Scott Huff and Grubb to get the best out of him.

ITS THE COACHING THATS MAKING THIS LINE LOOK AS BAD AS IT HAS.

And it was OBVIOUSLY the coaching under the last OC (no longer in the NFL) and line coach (not retained).

Are Bradford and his buds at Guard the best in the league? No. But they also arent the worst. And as was shown in the GB highlight reel from Sunday, its not just as simple as our guys not being big enough or quick enough. They are schematically outmatched... constantly. They do not function as a complete unit.

Damien Lewis looked just as bad as Bradford after his rookie year. Think about that. The longer he was in Seattle, the worse he got.

The issue is not how Schneider sees the O line or how he values individual positions. His assessment that Guards and Centers are overpaid on average more than other positions isnt at all inaccurate. There are fewer good interior o lineman and therefore, simple supply and demand dictate that a team will have to pay more for no other reason that supply is low.

And not signing Damien Lewis cant be just taken in a vaccum. It was either invest the dollars in Big Cat or at Guard. I think he made the right decision at the time and think his rationale was likely that the brilliant minds of Grubb and Huff could get Bradford, Tomlinson and Haynes to play above their pay grade.

And THAT is the issue with Schneider's stance to date. If you are going to rely on 2nd tier talent at the interior o line spots to overperform, YOU NEED A GREAT COACH TO DO THAT.

Schlereth has said it everytime hes been asked about us - a great coach can take an overall avergae player or unit and get them to excell.

We have taken average players at interior o line (because we had money to spend elsewhere) and hoped coaching could lift them up. Instead, coaching has let the whole thing collapse.

This is where I was at...I'm not too sure if Huff can "coach up" an NFL O line. Everyone knows it's a much different game from the college ranks.
Schlereth said it himself..."Your LINE COACH is the most important person on the team!!!" ...I just don't understand how they can run out numerous combinations on the O line and they, most times, always look like garbage. I understand you need consistency in who is out there, but I also believe they are NOT being coached properly...and that falls on Huff.

Carolina also gave Robert Hunt, another OG, $100m over five years in the offseason and he has been elite. Their RT, Taylor Moton, has not allowed a single sack this season. Maybe there's something to this whole "OL coaching" thing.
