Back in the late 70's/early 80's, I used to watch the Hawks on TV with the volume turned off and the local radio broadcast turned on. The radio call was always a second or two ahead of the TV, but not to the point where it was unwatchable. Back then, the radio crew traveled with the team and got to know them intimately. Unlike the TV telecast crew, they knew details like how to correctly pronounce their names, more about their backgrounds, etc.

The radio description, lacking a visual, was more detailed: "Hawks come out in an I formation, Krieg under center, Largent goes in motion left to right through the formation..." It was a good way for a novice to learn the terminology, in this case, what it meant to go in motion.

Pete Gross was the best sports radio announcer I've ever heard. His voice was just the right pace, not too hurried like an auctioneer yet fast enough to get out all the pertinent information, never stuttered or stumbled over words. And when he got excited, his voice would ramp up into this ultra-high pitch: "Touchdown Seahawks!" that really got me jacked up.

I've gotten to the point where I'll mentally screen out well over half of what the announcers are saying as most if it is generic or irrelevant, stuff I've heard repeated endlessly. People complain about this or that announcer, but I honestly don't recognize them as being either good or bad. All I hear are names, down and distance, penalties, etc. And there's way too much of a delay between the radio call and the TV broadcast to make the way I used to watch/listen to Hawks games viable.

Next to Paul Allen, I can't think of a more deserving member of the ROH than Pete Gross.

I'm right there with ya RD, with Pete Gross there was an air of intensity and excitement back then that is big time MISSING now.
It was an era of any and everything Seahawks that was presented in a way that got everyone hooked on Seattle sports to be and go 'ALL IN'.
Before the Seahawks, I was a Pro Football is 'somewhat entertaining' to I'm a Goddam Seahawks no quit Freak ing Fan.
