M's offer three year deal to Cabrera, but he's holding out for a 4th year.

Do you give it to him?
I think you have to over pay at this point and deal with the consequences later, as you are pretty close to a contending WS team without this move, this might be the move that puts you over the top.

thats a tough call, I don't like the idea, however I also don't like the idea of losing out on him.

Not a tough call at all. People were worried about a fifth year when the Mariners were thought to be offering four. If the M's give Cabrera four now then he will be thirty-four at the end of the contract. That is worth it for a switch - hitting batter for the second spot in the order.

Sounding less likely than ever that Seattle wants to give up one of our young prized pitchers for an outfielder to play in right field.

Looking like it's down to Cabrera or Rios, according to this article.

I am excited to see what the Mariners can do with the addition of two new bats (Cruz and possibly Melky), and the return of some young arms (like Hultzen) to the rotation.

2015 could be a fun year for Mariners fans! :th2thumbs: :thirishdrinkers:

Considering that when this process started people were debating whether to give him 4 or 5 years, yes I would give him 4 if that's all it's going to take. He's only 30.
There has to be more to it because if it's just that it makes no sense.

Melky to White Sox for 3 years, per Softy's twitter. If so, that's a damn shame.

Yeah its disappointing the M's wouldn't go 4 years. Now they have to trade for someone. And unfortunately it will be Viciedo.

I don't think Melky Cabrera is all that great at all. I'd rather just save the money.

Is Aoki the best option left?

It's not that Melky was so great in and of himself. It's the fact that he was the best option on the free agent market. Also, he was a switch hitter and perfect for the #2 spot in the lineup to set the table for Cano, Cruz, and Seager. Melky is also really good friends with Cano and Cruz, so chemistry with those guys in the lockerroom would have been good. He hits for a good average, had decent power, and is passable in the field.

Now that he's gone, we will have to give up assets in a trade to get a replacement, and likely that replacement will not be as good a fit for the lineup.

Likely the M's will trade for Viciedo now. Which sucks, because he is worse defensively, far worse offensively, and isn't a good fit for the #2 spot in the lineup. And we will have to give up a player or two to get him. But he is the likely option because the Melky signing in Chicago pushes him out of the lineup there and the M's have been showing interest in him because HRs is the only stat they look at.

Melky was the best option, so that is why I'm disappointed.

Brad Miller will be an outfielder for us. Wouldn't surprise me if Rios in as well. The free agent class for outfielders outside next year is a good one.

Yeah I've been reading a lot about how Miller has the potential to be a Ben Zobrist type of player, which would be awesome. If he really can make the transition to the OF, that would be the best option. But I would like them to sign a veteran like Rios or Aoki just in case Miller struggles.

I think they add Rios; and I not that happy about that Please don't bring back a former RF from Japan we had. Upton is a possibility depends on $

Upton doesn't depend on money, he depends on how many prospects you want to give up. With Melky off the table, the asking price for Upton probably just went up.

Understood. For Upton to be worthwhile and we give up players we would want more than rent a
Player I assume. So that is the $$.

Considering the money he received I don't think we are missing out. I get what you are saying for sure though. I wouldn't want to have been the team to have given him the amount of money he received.
