I hate to pick on Cal. I can only imagine the amount of pressure he probably has on him this season while not getting any time to recover after last season. But he has been historically bad this season.

That's why I said their moves were far from enough. Cal wasn't going to be able to live up to the pressure. Adding only Donovan and Refsnyder was more of a step back than a step forward at helping this team. Turns out adding Donovan and Refsnyder was even worse than I thought it would be.

Yeah cal won the lottery and they were counting on him winning it again… oops

The weird thing about Cal is it wasn't a one year wonder the dude has hit 30+ every year but his rookie year with 27. It's incredible for a catcher. It's just one of those years where the WBC stuff was weird, he got hurt, the added pressure of following up 60 etc. I still think he bounces back next year and is back to hitting 30-40 but this year is just baffling if not somewhat predictable.

The Mariners are the worst hitting team in baseball by overall team batting average and have scored the fewest runs in baseball by a fair margin. In other words, they can't hit and they can't score runs. They are absolutely horrible.

My point? You shouldn't be surprised when a starting pitcher pitches well against the Mariners. They all do.

Also, no. They aren't in cost cutting mode. Jerry Dipoto is just this bad at building a major league lineup. He's been running the team for 11 years now and the Mariners have been among the very worst hitting and scoring teams in baseball a large majority of the time he's been here. There have been 2 outlier seasons where the offense was pretty good, but otherwise they've been bottom 10 at best, and often among the very worst. This isn't cost cutting mode, it's just business as usual for Dipoto.

Also, the "it's because they're so cheap" excuse is overstated. The Mariners certainly don't spend extravagantly like the Dodgers or the Mets, but they're never bottom 10 in player payroll either. They're almost always middle of the pack in player payroll. They're 16th out of 30 teams this season and that's right around where they are every year. A pretty much average payroll should be able to be better than the worst hitting and scoring team in baseball.

Not sure how much it will matter, but he takes a lot of the blame for the lack of offense. A lot of typical sports cliches, of course, but it sounds genuine.

If he’s not in cost cutting mode why the platoons, why the dumpster diving, why not get proven big league bats like even that slugger from the Mets, Pete Alonzo, between him and Naylor, I could think of other things too, but is there no one available? Is he saving space for rookies? It’s been a long time, I guess we do have prospects, but watch them revamp this pitching staff with guys like Kade and call up these young hitters and ruin them and we’re ten more years away, just be patient.

Is this team still feeling effects from jack z?
Is JP Crawford the last guy left that we acquired from ditching the Robinson cano Jean segura Nelson Cruz era?

I agree, cal’s trajectory was up and up each year and I really thought that the 60 was a lot but not a fluke. This year and injury are the fluke but combine the iron man season last year with the WBC and the injury, I think Cal puts a lot of wear on his body
