I would say you have to go at it with a positive mental attitude rather than an "aggressive" one. The "can do" attitude is the right one. I encourage patients to "work" at being fit, positive and eating well. I try not to use violent or negative imagery such as struggle, fight, battle, beat, war, etc. I try to use other words like goals, tasks, hopes, etc which still give them energy to go through dealing with the disease.
But I recognize some people relate better to the fighting imagery but I find they get more often depressed and suffer more than those that work through the disease and treatment as a journey with goals and tasks to focus on. That may be because I deal with nearly uniformly fatal forms of cancer so it's a losing battle 99% of the time.
Congrats on getting past cancer 3 times. My wife has had one cancer successfully treated and I hope that's the last. It's one thing to treat the disease for a living and quite another to have it hit you at home.
