The talking heads are giving the Bengals an "A" grade for the Mafe signing. I trust Macdonald's judgment over these so-called experts.
All the Mafe hype I've heard is based on some advanced metrics, like pass-rush win rate and and run-stop win rate. The problem with these seemingly objective metrics is that it still depends on the other players on the defensive line as well as the scheme that you're playing in.
Those of us who watched every Seahawks game know that the metrics don't really line up with the eye test. Mafe didn't have the same impact on games as DeMarcus Lawrence or Derick Hall this season.
I like Mafe, and I hope that he has a good year next year. He's capable of it. He had 9 sacks in 2023. But JS and MM probably decided that Mafe's production can be replaced and that allocating $20 million to him didn't fit into their plans.
