As of today, June 5th, the Seahawks have 11 wide receivers on the active roster. Listed below in order of the depth chart they are:

Group 1: DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Jaxon Smith-Njigba

Group 2: Laviska Shenault Jr, Jake Bobo, Dee Eskridge

Group 3: Dareke Young, Easop Winston Jr, Cody White

Group 4: Hayden Hatten, Dee Williams

So, a few things that I want to talk about off the bat here. First, how will 25 year old Laviska Shenault fit in this offense? Really, how are ANY of these receivers going to look in this new offense is an even more intriguing question, but I name Shenault simply for his past success in the league, primarily in Jacksonville his first two years. His rookie season, he caught 58 for 600 and 5 TDs. His Panther career was a bit of a dud, but their QB issues play a factor in that.

Next, I'd also like to bring up a player that I'm personally excited about in undrafted rookie Hayden Hatten. The former Idaho Vandal has some spark, and can make some great plays as seen in this highlight video below.

Are there any new receivers that you're looking forward to seeing? Anybody from group 3 or 4 that you think has a chance to make the team and play a role going forward?

1. DK
2. Lockett
3. JSN
4. Shenault
5. Bobo

These are my guys that will make the team

Shenault, that guy, can somewhat moonlight as a running back IMO.

He’s built really well. Can take hits and keep chugging along. Can catch passes in the flat. Like, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Shenault in the backfield, honestly.

Can he pass block?

I mean if he’s in the backfield, I’m assuming, he’s going to be running the ball or at least, he’s second option, catching a swing pass or he has a flat route and he’ll likely get the ball.

In terms of if he can pass block. He’s a pretty physical guy when he has in the ball in his hands. I would say he’s capable of pass blocking to an extent. If he’s going to be blocking on a deep shot play action, I think it’s possible for that particular snap.

Maybe not all 60 minutes you want him in the backfield but he can be the Seahawks version of Deebo Samuel every now and then.

Shenaults routes aren’t great but they work against zone coverages.

Shenault greatest strength is his YAC.

If Seattle and Grubb can master the screen pass plays (Carroll never could), Shenault, can definitely be the benefactor of it.

I think our WR group is great.

It is just too bad they cannot throw passes to themselves.

JSN is going to get Lockett cut next offseason. I assume four spots are set. Shenault and Eskridge are probably battling for one opening. I expect Young will get a LOT of looks in camp and preseason and should have a leg up on the UDFAs, but he's nowhere near safe.

In a perfect world yes. A lot will depend on injuries. Feel like our receiving core are due some. They've generally stayed healthy.

If our linebackers are hurt this year we are probably screwed due to lack of depth.

Tyler is 31 years old, not 51.

I expect Tyler Lockett to have improved stats from last year.
Now, Geno doesn't throw the huge yardage moonballs that Russ used to, accounting for decreased avg and longest receptions.

Having said that, new coaching should realize though that more than any wide receiver, Tyler catches pretty well every ball thrown to him, and more so when it's 3rd down and needed. i expect he will get lots of targets.

Laviska is a fantastic fit because his skillset is very different from the other receivers on the roster.

Laviska's primary strengths are lateral movement and catching near the LOS. He's a very competent player on sweep motion, bubble screens, working in the flat, and generally has reliable short-yardage hands. May be the best blocker of our WRs as well - gives it his all. He is also a stud special teamer.

He doesn't have the top-end athleticism to threaten the intermediate and deep ranges much, but he can do everything else and we already have guys who can either take the top off or find the soft spot in zone. Laviska is what we needed to diversify the room.

To be fair, Tyler Lockett is an old 31. His leg injuries combined with time have taken away much of his speed and he's getting by on savvy. He's declining noticeably.

He's still got a year or two of being worth the price of rostering him, but I would just operate as if he's already hit "the wall" and allow myself to be pleasantly surprised with whatever amount of ball he's got left. To his credit, he certainly has the self-preservation mindset down.
