... PI called? The defender was all over him before the ball was there so where were the flags?

If you recall earlier the play penalized against us, they waited for the result of the play to determine whether there was a need for a flag. Probably the same idea there. If there was a reason to throw because of no catch, I would have expected a flag.

It looked like a borderline good no-call to me. No arms were tugged, no real impedance of progress.

I agree, I would not have called a penalty on that play, there was nothing that interrupted Kearse at all on the route or the catch.

There were worse non-calls during the game than this one, but at this point it is, thankfully, academic.

There was plenty of contact at the moment of the catch - just like there should have been. Solid coverage, really. But the pass couldn't have been more perfect. Without a safety high and in Cover 0, there was nothing the Packers could have done.

there was more contact on the Baldwin 3rd down incompletion than the Kearse play

Good no call. Super slo-mo it looks like interference. They let the DB's play aggressive all game. Not gonna start calling that cheap crap then and there.

It wasn't the worst non-call, but it was definitely pass interference. The defender clearly gets there before the ball, has his hand mashed on Kearse's face and even snags the face mask. All while draped all over the back of him. With the way the rules are today, that's pass interference. Before, it could be argued it wasn't, but it's pretty clear with today's rules.

You can see the defender clearly off his feet, draped all over Kearse before the ball arrives.

The ball's not even in the frame and the defender is completely airborne with his hand on Kearse's facemask.

It's even clearer in this shot, just prior to Kearse catching the ball.

And from the reverse angle, ball's not yet even in the picture.

And perhaps the clearest shot, just before the catch.

Wow, I totally disagree w/ most of y'all. If that wasn't DPI, there's no point in having the rule at all. Defender was there plenty early (no need for slo-mo to see it) and in no way playing the ball. Ref should have been reaching for the flag instantly, IMO.

absolutely PI - I said it live then in some posts here later. Agree OP

Just an item of curiousity if it had been dropped or intercepted....would we have gotten the ball at the 1. Purely academic at this point. By the book flag should have been thrown and then picked up but I could see the official just saying let me put up my hands instead.

Totally PI. But we got a no-call earlier that would have been OPI against Jermaine so obviously they were calling it pretty loose. I'm glad they were.

He got his hands in Kearses facemask, but it was a good no call.

All things being equal, Hawks fans should want the game to be called loose.

the game can't end on a defensive penalty right?

If PI was called and the ball was not caught the ball would have been placed on the one yard line. An accepted PI call cannot result in a TD.

I don't think PI would have been called there even if the ball wasn't caught. The contact was very minimal, happens like that all the time without being called. No way they let the game be decided at that point on a tick tack call.

That is what I find frustrating about the calling of DPI. It is so inconsistent! IMO...the Refs need more guidelines from the NFL. They ought to be "in school" before the season begins in order for all Refs to call DPI with the same amount of contact before the ball arrives.
