Last contract Wilson signed he was paid just under what Rodgers got. Here is Rodgers new deal. We are now approaching the should we or shouldn't we with that much $$. I hate it, but I say we have to at this point.

Thoughts?

Yes. Obviously. Unless you want to spend another 20 years hoping we get someone as good as Hasselbeck, and end of settling for a long string of Flynns while watching Russ take Cleveland to repeated Super Bowl(s)

You're worth whatever someone is willing to pay you. In a true free market athletes would be paid even more. I'd say Rodgers is worth substantially more than that to that organization.

Considering the current valuation of the franchise Russ is definitely worth 33m/year, if not more.

No.

But if I'm Wilson's agent I can easily get this much - Russ NEVER gets hurt, whereas Rodgers has missed time (even if only a few games) in multiple seasons. Both have a super bowl ring. Rodgers has one MVP, but Wilson had an MVP caliber season last year.

And then look at Cousins - obviously Wilson deserves more than him.

This is all why, as of this moment, I want the Rams to be the first contending team (if we are still that in a few years) to forego paying a franchise QB and draft a rookie to replace him. Of course, it's easier for me to say that when Goff isn't a top QB yet.

Not Cleveland, but maybe the Giants or Jets.

If you have a top QB you have to pay the going rate. That is just a given.

He is worth Rodgers money.

It is how the league maintains parity and prevents teams with great QB's from stacking their lineups. If you have a franchise QB, then you have to pay him.

If that is what the market is for a franchise top 5 QB then pay the guy and move on.

Eventually these QBs will all price themselves out of jobs as $33 mil for an injured player will not be carried long by any team.

Fortunately Wilson has stayed pretty healthy to now (touches wood).

It would depend on whether they really think McGough is a prospect and Hundley, if either are just guys who can hold a clipboard take a few snaps and manage an offense as a placeholder then you have to pay him. If they have Charlie Whitehurst evaluations of them then we may see some pain on the Horizon if both these guys flame out fast.

One thing McGough has done is elevate an offense in college and win, what they saw in Wilson also, not sure how they are looking at this kid now.

And yet fans expect to compete with Brady at $15M per year and even Brees at $25M per year? Both signed within the last year.

That is the problem. Also Pete needs to turn him and the offense lose and support him well enough to succeed which likely means not having the $$ to buy the #1 defense.

I remember having this conversation for Wilson when he got his first "mega-deal". Truth is, having a franchise qb means not being able to pay other players, and we made that choice already. Wilson is still here and many other high paid players are not. We need to continue to build the offense and the cost of this is having a down to earth defense.

If you want an established franchise QB you have to pay the going rate. The only other option is try to make it work without an established franchise QB which is awfully difficult to do.

So to me the question is, do we want to try to compete in this league with an established franchise QB or without one? I like our chances a lot more with one.

Exactly the point I just made above. 100% agree. I hope Pete knows and buys into this. Signing Lockett and Brown indicates he does, but still is a change in his recent and past philosophy.

I think this makes for an uneven playing field.

I would be in favor of a salary cap for QB's that is completely separate from the others player's salary cap.

He’s worth whatever the market for elite tier QBs are worth. Wilson, as long as he continues to produce at his rate, will always be amongst the top 5 QBs in the NFL at time of signing his deal. Unless he chooses otherwise.
