Actually, if the team had room for Bruce and wanted to keep him, they could have signed him on a one-year rental for $7.8 million by picking up his fifth-year option.

In any case, 9.25 APY, so Irvin comes in about where expected.

4th round comp barring season ending injuries to the guys above him, and him turning into an all-pro at age 29.

My "source" re the timing of his being able to pass a physical is what John Clayton has stated on 710ESPN in one of the recent afternoon sessions.

Not yet. That list needs to include Osemele and Malik Jackson above Irvin, but the NFL will award up to four 3rd round comp picks, so Irvin currently sits at #4.

Smith and Schwartz still remain unsigned though (both of whom have a decent shot of eclipsing 9.25 APY), and if Osweiler leaves Denver, forget about it.

Edit: also possible is that the Vikings signed Boone to starting tackle money, although I doubt that. He's more in the 7-8 range, if I had to guess.

Part of what's happening with the Raiders and Jags is that they've been way under the cap for a few years, and with the new CBA they're contractually obligated to hit 89% of the salary cap on a rolling average from 2013-2016.

If they don't, rather than going to building their team the money left that would get them to 89% just goes into a check they have to cut to the NFLPA.

So, they're "overpaying" by traditional logic, but the money (and guaranteed money; these deal are also likely front loaded) looks stupidly high because this is literally money that they're going to have to give away for nothing if they don't spend it this year.

Literally the only thing the new CBA gets right IMO is it prevents owners from being cheap @sses and not actually investing in their rosters.

The downside is that you get a couple clubs who didn't quite plan for how this whole things works, and as a result are now trying to scramble to make up for it (really no different than the complete cap hell some teams got themselves into immediately following the institution of the salary cap because they hadn't yet figured out how to manage the cap well).
