Avril really came on in the 2nd half of the year. He's a beast...way more explosive off the snap than Clemons. I can't see us paying both Clem and Avril next year. Either Clemons restructures or he's probably gone.

I also agree that Kaep was going to Crabtree or Boldin either way.

English said that he didn't see if Boldin or Davis was open or not. It wouldn't matter....pick either Boldin or Davis. Kap wasn't going to see them both after looking at Crabtree. Patton being open in the flat is also never going ot happen. Look up how many receptions SF RBs have all year. There's a reason for that...RB in the flat is a safety valve and Kap is usually running by that point.

They weren't open. Basically every defensive player on the field outside of Sherm and Smith were covering those two... Even if they were open, Avril got home so quickly that he wouldn't have had time to go through any progressions. He was going to Crabtree the entire time.

Seemed like a good throw and pretty accurate. And probably if Sherman wasn't 6'3, they might have gotten a completion. I say over 3/4 of CBs won't be able to make a play like Sherman did.

I can agree with this.

Kaep said he was throwing there regardless. Made his mind up presnap.

Kaepernick just gave a token answer, as with all his post-game stuff.

You don't avoid Sherman all game and then go, "gee -- now is the time, with the game on the line, to target him pre-snap."

He also said he'll go to Crabtree every time 1v1. So why wasn't every throw aimed at Crabtree then? Because he wasn't double covered at any point in the game.

Kaepernick's answer is nonsense.

Avril had a huge impact there.

I disagree. Kaep loves to go to Crabtree in the redzone and in big game situations. Remember in the Super Bowl he went to Crabtree 3 times on that final possession. I also thinks what he said fits Kaeps decision making. They said they wanted to go backside with the 1 on 1 coverage. Most QB's want that kind of matchup. Obviously Sherman being the 1 in coverage you would think would change the equation.

But I think Kaep has ultimate confidence in his physical ability (to his detriment at times) in combination with his confidence in Crabs. Therefore, what he said was exactly what he wanted to do, IMO. His hubris bit him in the backside.

Similarly he thought he could get the ball over Chancellor on the pick, which turned out to be a horrible throw. Sometimes he has too much confidence, IMO.

Interesting take and I agree to an extent. I do think that Avril getting quick pressure forced Kap to release the ball a bit sooner than maybe he wanted too, whether or not he was going to Crab no matter what, we probably won't ever truly know.

yep, he was going there regardless.

Yeah, that's what the 49ers fans are so angry about. Kaep is determined to pass to Crabtree when the game is on the line, even though he has other guys wide open.

He had running backs open all day, but he refused to even look at them. He went to Gore on that 4th and 2 on their last drive, but that was out of desperation. But he could have made similar throws many times to running backs and found success.

His one-track mind is what killed them in the end.

But the pressure from Avril only helped to pressure the throw, which is a great thing.

Between his tendency to do so and the fact that he never even looked anywhere else on the field then throw in his admission (despite losing the game on this mistake) that he wasn't looking to go anywhere else... I think we can easily conclude it was his first last and only read on the play which was made presnap.

Not sure why that is hard for people to grasp. Kaep choked tough.

In Kraep's defense regarding passes to those check-down guys like RBs... SEA has won all year on making guys do that. Teams that have beaten us, did it with explosive plays.

You have got to find a way to get over the top of that SEA secondary if you want to beat the Seahawks and he did it to Boldin on one occasion. We're the best but we're not unbeatable in that regard. He took a chance and it didn't work out.

Had that been Earl defending Crabtree, it would have been a TD because Crabtree pushed off and it was Sherm's length that saved the day.

But it wasn't Earl. It was Sherm on a 1on1 back corner throw no other way around it. Kaep knew it before the snap and still tested Dick Sherm. Dumb dumb dumb. Sherm hasn't been beat on a fade route all year it feels like and most times he runs it better than the intended WR.

Of course he did/was.

Huge shout out to Old One Read for stamping Seattle's ticket to NJ.

I have no idea if the pressure from Avril affected where he would go with the ball, I won't debate that, but one thing is for sure - That was all Sherman in the defense of that play once he did throw the ball. I think we can all agree on that. That was a perfect pass it looked like to me, would have hit Crabtree in stride.

Is anyone familiar with Kaeps spirals? That ball had a wobble, was clearly underthrown, and I'm inclined to give Avril a ton of credit.

Not a token answer at all. Kaep made no attempt to scan the field.

He never scans the field.

He deliberately looks at his intended target on pretty much every snap, sometimes makes one other read and then bails.

On this occasion he didn't even have time for the second read because he was centimetres away from having his clock cleaned by Cliff Avril.

My point exactly. He was going there regardless and made up his mind presnap. Doesn't matter if Avril was there no way that pass gets caught with the coverage Sherm had on Crab.

It's not your point.

Your point is he was going there all the time and would've thrown that pass even if Cliff Avril was sat on the turf, legs crossed enjoying a 'Flaming Sambuca'.

My point is he sometimes has a second read or bails out of the pocket. On this occasion he couldn't do either, he HAD to throw to that first read because Avril was about to hammer him.

He definitely shortarmed and rushed the throw too which could have easily caused the underthrow so even if he was going there no matter what he still had a huge impact on the throw.

Uh no. Avril had an impact on the play. I agree. My point was regardless of what YOU think Kaep was going to take that shot regardless. Kaep said so. Harbaugh said so. Crabtree said so. Look at the history of this situation Kaep does it all the time. Not trying to offend you because I agree Avril would have destroyed him if he went second read BUT that was never going to happen as Kaep already made up his mind to throw the fade as soon as he saw the coverage presnap.

That's my point and don't tell me otherwise. You can try to put words in my mouth but you have the burden to disprove what everyone can see and what all people involved admitted to happening.

Go and have a sit down or something for crying out loud.

Can't they both receive credit since they are teammates? Does not the defensive line compliment the secondary and vice versa?
