How would you define success for Macdonald’s first season?

Looks like we are doing a Joint practice with the Titans, been a long time since this team did that, last time didn't end well there was a pretty good dustup with the team that did it.

8-9 wins but most importantly just a moving in the right direction feeling. It may take some time for Macdonald to get the pieces he needs.

If the schemes work, winning 5 games won't happen. We won 9 games last year when the schemes didn't work.
Injuries, fumble luck, odd instances where one part works but is undermined by another (think of how good QB pressure can be undone by poor coverage and good coverage undone by lack of pass rush), etc. There's no shortage of ways to still lose games while progressing a team toward something that can contend.

Pete took over a 5-11 team and improved them to 7 wins and a playoff win in his first year. I want Macdonald to have a similar improvement, and the situation he's inheriting isn't nearly as bad as what Pete walked into.
Improving from 5 wins to 7 is a helluva lot easier than improving from 9 wins to 11. ;)

this ^^^^

Also, making the playoffs at 7-9 isn't exactly something to pump the chest about. It was a blast beating the Saints, but at the same time, making the playoffs at under .500 is meh.

You say that, but making the playoffs at all is an accomplishment. Making the playoffs with a sub .500 record means your division sucks, but it's still an accomplishment. And it seems like every time it happens, the whole rest of the NFL makes noises about how that team doesn't deserve to be there, and then the team shows in that first playoff game exactly why they did deserve to be there.

11 wins is how I would define success. Anything less and the best case scenario is that they are "building for future success". Since we have no idea if they will actually reach that success in the next few years, I can't label a .500ish season as successful.

Playoffs ideally but failing that having a clear identity and being really good at something rather than middling that we can build on.
